# Business Intelligence

**Business intelligence**, commonly abbreviated as BI, is a data analysis and decision-
support approach that helps organisations transform information from different sources
into meaningful insights. It brings together processes such as data collection,
preparation, analysis, reporting and visualisation. Business intelligence is not
a single software product. It is an integrated structure consisting of different
technologies, methods and business processes.

The primary purpose of business intelligence is to provide reliable and understandable
access to organisational data. Information from sales, marketing, finance, operations,
human resources and customer service can be analysed together. The results are presented
through tables, charts, reports and interactive dashboards. This enables managers
and teams to assess current conditions and base their decisions on measurable evidence.

Business intelligence solutions can serve different user groups, ranging from senior
executives to departmental employees. The information required by each user varies
according to their responsibilities and decision-making authority. Senior management
may focus on strategic objectives and overall performance, while operational teams
may monitor daily activities and detailed performance indicators. Reports and dashboards
should therefore be designed according to user roles, access permissions and information
requirements.

**Data warehouses** are frequently used in business intelligence processes, although
they are not mandatory for every BI implementation. A data warehouse combines information
from different business systems according to common rules and stores it in a structure
suitable for analysis. This can improve consistency by preventing the same metric
from being calculated differently across separate departments. Modern BI solutions
may also connect to data lakes, cloud platforms, operational databases and application
sources.

Business intelligence helps organisations compare historical and current performance.
Sales trends, budget results, customer behaviour, inventory levels and operational
efficiency can all be monitored regularly. These analyses make it easier to identify
performance declines, bottlenecks and unexpected changes at an earlier stage. Organisations
can then improve processes and allocate resources more effectively.

BI solutions can shorten decision-making cycles and enable organisations to respond
more quickly to emerging developments. Real-time or regularly updated dashboards
allow managers to monitor critical indicators through a single interface. Automated
reporting can reduce the time spent combining data manually and preparing spreadsheets.
However, reliable reporting depends on effective management of data quality, metric
definitions and access controls.

Business intelligence can also contribute to the development of a shared **data
language** across departments. Using consistent definitions for customers, revenue
and conversions can reduce discrepancies between sales, marketing and finance reports.
Centrally shared reports and dashboards enable teams to evaluate performance using
the same information. This strengthens collaboration and can help resolve disagreements
within decision-making processes more efficiently.

Business intelligence may involve methods such as querying, reporting, data visualisation,
online analytical processing and performance measurement. Data mining and statistical
analysis may also be used in certain BI projects, although these fields are not
identical to business intelligence. Data mining focuses more specifically on discovering
hidden patterns and relationships within large datasets. Business intelligence is
generally used to understand historical and current information, monitor performance
and support decisions.

The success of a business intelligence initiative does not depend solely on the
selected technology. The organisation must define appropriate performance indicators,
use reliable data sources and understand user requirements. Unnecessary or poorly
defined metrics may make decision-making more complex rather than improving it.
BI projects should therefore be developed through close collaboration between technical
teams and business departments.

In summary, **business intelligence** is an important decision-support approach
that transforms organisational data into understandable, consistent and actionable
information. When implemented effectively, it helps businesses monitor performance,
identify inefficiencies and evaluate strategic objectives more accurately. Data
quality, governance, security and user needs must all be considered to produce reliable
results. A well-designed BI environment can strengthen an organisation’s data-driven
decision-making culture.
