# Click Through Rate **(CTR)**

**Click Through Rate**, commonly abbreviated as CTR, is a digital marketing metric
that shows the percentage of users who click an ad or link after seeing it. Its
basic formula is **number of clicks / number of impressions**. The result is usually
expressed as a percentage. CTR helps advertisers understand how effectively an ad
attracts user attention.

CTR can be explained with a simple example. If an ad receives 10,000 impressions
and 850 users click on it, the CTR is calculated as 850 / 10,000. In this case,
the click-through rate is 8.5%. An impression means that the ad was displayed to
the user, while a click means that the user interacted with the ad and followed
the related link. For this reason, impressions and clicks are separate metrics.

A high CTR often indicates that the ad is attention-grabbing and reasonably relevant
to the target audience. However, a high CTR does not always mean that the campaign
is successful. If users click the ad but do not complete a purchase, submit a form,
register or perform another desired action, the campaign may still fail to meet
its business objective. CTR should therefore be evaluated together with conversion
rate, cost per conversion, ROAS, revenue and lead quality.

A low CTR may indicate that the ad is not attractive enough, the audience is not
selected correctly or the message does not match user intent. The headline, description,
image, offer, targeting, keyword selection or ad placement may need to be reviewed.
However, a low CTR is not always negative. In some brand awareness campaigns, the
primary objective may be reach and visibility rather than clicks.

To improve CTR, ad copy should be clear, relevant and aligned with user intent.
A strong value proposition in the headline, a helpful message in the description
and an appropriate **CTA** can improve click-through performance. Phrases such as“
Get a Quote”, “Explore Now”, “View Details” or “Buy Now” can be used depending on
the campaign objective. However, misleading or exaggerated CTAs may generate clicks
in the short term while harming user experience and conversion quality.

There is no single ideal CTR value that applies to every campaign. Platform, industry,
campaign objective, ad format, audience and competition all affect the expected
rate. Search ads often have higher CTRs than display ads because user intent is
more explicit. Display ads, social media ads and video ads should be evaluated according
to their own performance dynamics.

Successful **CTR optimisation** should not focus only on generating more clicks.
The real objective is to reach the right user with the right message and encourage
the expected action after the click. For this reason, ad content, landing page experience,
targeting, bidding strategy and user behaviour should be analysed together. When
interpreted correctly, CTR helps measure ad relevance and optimise campaign performance
more effectively.
