# Domain Name

A **domain name** is the readable internet address that users type into a browser
to reach a website. Examples include `kriko.blog`, `google.com` and `example.com`.
However, the full expression `https://kriko.blog/` is not only a domain name; it
is a URL. In this structure, `https` is the protocol, `kriko.blog` is the domain
name and `/` is the path. Therefore, the domain name is the readable and memorable
main part of a web address.

Devices and servers on the internet communicate with each other through IP addresses.
IP addresses can appear in IPv4 format, such as `192.0.2.1`, or in the longer IPv6
format. However, it is not practical for users to memorize the IP address of every
website. Domain names make these technical addresses easier for people to understand
and remember. In this respect, domain names can be compared to names in a phone
book that represent phone numbers.

The main system that allows domain names to work is **DNS**, or the Domain Name
System. DNS resolves domain names typed by users into the corresponding IP addresses.
For example, when a user types `example.com` into a browser, DNS finds which IP
address that domain points to and allows the browser to connect to the relevant
server. This is why DNS is often described as the phone book of the internet.

There is an important distinction here: DNS usually translates a domain name into
an IP address. Translating an IP address back into a domain name is handled through
different mechanisms such as reverse DNS, and it is not always required or available.
Also, not every website necessarily has a completely unique IP address. In shared
hosting, CDN and cloud infrastructures, multiple domain names can serve content
from the same IP address. Therefore, the relationship between domain names and IP
addresses does not always have to be one-to-one.

Domain names are unique. The same domain name cannot be registered by two different
people or organizations at the same time. For example, if `example.com` is already
registered, someone else cannot register the exact same domain name again. However,
similar names can be registered with different extensions. `example.com`, `example.
net` and `example.org` are different domain names. This makes domain selection important
for branding, SEO and digital asset management.

The domain name structure is hierarchical. The rightmost part of a domain name is
the top-level domain, or **TLD**. In `example.com`, `.com` is the TLD. In `example.
org`, `.org` is the TLD; in `example.net`, `.net` is the TLD; and in `kriko.blog`,`.
blog` is the TLD. Country-code domains use extensions such as `.tr`, `.de`, `.uk`
or `.fr` to represent specific countries.

Domain names associated with Türkiye can use the `.tr` extension. For example, in`
example.com.tr`, the rightmost `.tr` is the country-code top-level domain. The `.
com.tr` structure can be considered a second-level extension under the Turkish domain
structure. These extensions may be preferred for organization type, country targeting,
brand trust or local market recognition.

When choosing a domain name, it is important to consider not only the extension,
but also brand fit, readability, spelling ease, pronunciation, length and the possibility
of confusion. Short, memorable, easy-to-type domain names that fit the brand are
usually more advantageous. Hyphens, numbers, difficult words or phrases that are
easy to misspell can harm user experience. Trademark risks, legal conflicts and
consistency with social media usernames should also be checked.

The phrase “buying a domain” is common in everyday language, but technically domain
names are **registered** for specific periods. A person or organization can register
an available domain name in their own name, usually starting from one year and extending
for different durations. At the end of this period, the domain name must be renewed.
If it is not renewed, it can go through certain expiration processes and eventually
become available for someone else to register.

For this reason, renewal dates must be tracked carefully in domain management. If
a critical domain expires, the website, email accounts, advertising campaigns and
brand access may be interrupted. Automatic renewal, up-to-date payment information,
the correct contact email and a reliable registrar can reduce these risks. For main
brand domains, multi-year registration and additional security measures can also
be considered.

Domain registration is done through domain registrars. A registrar is an authorized
intermediary that allows users to search for, register, renew and manage available
domain names. After a domain is registered, DNS records are configured to define
which web server, email service, CDN or other service the domain should point to.
A records, CNAME, MX and TXT records are among the commonly used DNS record types
in domain management.

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is a non-profit
organization involved in coordinating the internet’s unique identifiers, including
the domain name system and IP address allocation. ICANN does not directly sell domains
to every user. Instead, it plays a role in coordinating the domain name system,
registry operators and registrar ecosystem. This structure helps ensure that domain
names are managed in an organized, unique and functional way across the internet.

A domain name is important not only for a website, but also for email communication.
For example, corporate email addresses such as `info@example.com` are created using
a domain name. Therefore, a domain is not only the address of a website; it is also
a core part of a brand’s digital identity. A reliable domain structure helps users
recognize, remember and reach the correct brand address.

From an SEO perspective, a domain name does not guarantee success on its own. In
the past, domains containing exact keywords were often seen as having a stronger
advantage. Today, content quality, technical SEO, user experience, authority, brand
trust and search intent alignment are more critical factors. Still, a short, trustworthy,
brand-appropriate and memorable domain name can support organic visibility and brand
awareness.

In summary, a **domain name** is a readable and unique address structure that helps
internet users reach websites. It makes IP addresses more understandable for people
and points to the relevant servers through the DNS system. It can be used with extensions
such as `.com`, `.net`, `.org`, `.blog` or `.tr`. Choosing the right domain name
and managing it properly is critical for a brand’s website, email infrastructure,
digital credibility and long-term online presence.
