# Encode

Encoding is the process of converting information into a specific format or structure
so that it can be transmitted, stored or processed by another system. Commonly used
in software development, data management and digital communications, encoding allows
information to be represented in a form that different applications and devices
can interpret.

Encoding should not be confused with encryption. Encoding changes the representation
of data to ensure compatibility, readability or efficient processing, whereas encryption
protects data by making it unreadable without the appropriate decryption key. Encoded
data can generally be restored using a publicly known method and does not provide
security on its own.

Encoding can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

**Data Compression:** Data compression algorithms use specific encoding techniques
to represent information using less storage space. This can reduce file sizes, accelerate
data transmission and minimise storage requirements.

**Data Security:** Encoding alone does not secure sensitive information. Encryption
must be used when data needs to be protected against unauthorised access. However,
encoded formats may be used alongside encryption during secure data transmission
and storage processes.

**Media Encoding:** Audio, video and image content can be encoded into different
formats to ensure compatibility with various devices, platforms and applications.
For example, video content may be encoded in formats such as MP4 or AVI for storage,
streaming or playback.

**Text Encoding:** Text is encoded using defined character sets so that it can be
processed and displayed correctly. Unicode, for example, provides a standardised
method for representing characters from different languages and writing systems.

**Data Communication:** During data transmission, information is encoded into a
format that can be exchanged between different systems. Communication protocols
use defined data structures and encoding methods to ensure that information is transmitted
accurately and interpreted correctly by the receiving system.
