# Gzip

**Gzip** is a widely used compression method designed for file and data compression
and supported across different operating systems. Its name comes from “GNU zip,”
and its first version was developed in 1992 by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler. 
In terms of web performance, Gzip helps reduce page loading time by allowing text-
based files sent from the server to the browser to be transferred in smaller sizes.

On websites, Gzip compression makes data transfer between the user’s browser and
the web server more efficient. When a user visits a web page, files such as HTML,
CSS, JavaScript, JSON, XML and similar resources are sent from the server to the
browser. If Gzip is enabled, the server sends these files in compressed form, and
the browser decompresses them before rendering the page. This reduces the amount
of transferred data and can help the page load faster, especially on slower connections.

Gzip does not provide the same benefit for every file type on a website. It can 
significantly reduce the size of text-based files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript 
and JSON. However, it usually does not provide a major benefit for already compressed
files such as JPEG, PNG, WebP, MP4 or PDF. Therefore, it is not accurate to say 
that Gzip compresses all files by 70%. The compression ratio depends on the file
type, file structure and the data it contains.

Using Gzip is an important optimization step for web performance. When transfer 
size is reduced, page load time can decrease, bandwidth usage can be lowered and
server resources can be used more efficiently. This can positively affect user experience.
Gzip compression can provide an important performance contribution, especially for
mobile users, slower connections or high-traffic websites.

From an SEO perspective, the effect of Gzip is indirect. Page experience, speed 
and technical performance are among the important signals for search engines. Gzip
can support user experience and Core Web Vitals performance by helping pages load
faster. However, Gzip alone does not increase organic traffic or guarantee rankings.
It should be evaluated together with content quality, search intent alignment, technical
SEO, mobile compatibility, site architecture and page experience.

There are different ways to enable Gzip compression. One method is activating compression
through the hosting control panel. In some cPanel installations, there may be an
option such as “Optimize Website.” From this section, compression can be enabled
for certain MIME types or all suitable text-based content. However, panel options
may vary depending on the hosting provider and server configuration.

Another method is defining compression through the `.htaccess` file. On Apache servers,
the `mod_deflate` module is commonly used to enable Gzip compression for files such
as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Some older setups may refer to `mod_gzip`, but in modern
Apache configurations, `mod_deflate` is generally preferred. Before making such 
changes, it should be checked whether the server supports the relevant modules, 
and a backup of the file should be taken.

On WordPress websites, Gzip compression can also be enabled through plugins. Cache
and performance plugins often offer features such as Gzip or Brotli compression,
page caching, CSS/JS minification and browser caching. However, plugin selection
should consider update frequency, reliability, theme compatibility and hosting compatibility.
Unnecessary or outdated plugins can create security and compatibility issues instead
of improving performance.

In modern web performance, **Brotli** also stands out as an alternative or complementary
compression method to Gzip. In some cases, Brotli can provide better compression
ratios than Gzip, especially for text-based resources. Many modern browsers and 
CDN providers support Brotli. However, because Gzip is still widely supported, it
continues to be used as a basic compression standard on many websites.

Whether Gzip compression is working correctly can be checked with performance testing
tools. Browser developer tools, PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, GTmetrix or WebPageTest
can help show whether resources returned by the server are compressed. If compression
is not active, server settings, CDN configuration, hosting panel options or performance
plugins should be reviewed.

In summary, **Gzip** is an important compression method that allows text-based resources
on websites to be transferred in smaller sizes. When configured correctly, it can
reduce page loading time, lower bandwidth usage and improve user experience. However,
for successful web performance, Gzip should be considered together with image optimization,
caching, CDN usage, JavaScript/CSS optimization, server response time and Core Web
Vitals improvements.
