# Host

A **host** is a computer, server or device that provides services to other devices,
users or systems on a network. In web terminology, a host usually refers to the
server that stores a website’s files, data, applications or services. When a user
types a website address into a browser, a request is sent to the server where that
website’s files are stored. The server then responds to this request and allows
the web page to be displayed to the user.

For a website to be published on the internet, its files must be stored in an environment
that is continuously accessible. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, videos, database
files and application components are hosted on a server so that they can be delivered
to users. These servers are usually located in data centres with high-speed internet
connections, strong hardware, security measures and continuous operating capacity.
This allows the website to remain accessible to visitors at all times.

This is where the concept of **hosting** comes in. Hosting is the service of storing
a website’s files and data on an internet-connected server. Instead of setting up
their own physical server, a website owner can rent server space or a hosting service
from a hosting company. The hosting company provides the server operation, connection
infrastructure, basic security measures and often technical management processes.
This allows the website to be published online in a way that users can access.

The concept of host is not limited to websites. In network structures, a computer,
printer, server, modem, IoT device or another system can also be defined as a host.
For example, a file-sharing server within a corporate network can be considered
a host because it provides services to other computers. Therefore, in a general
sense, a host means a device that has an address on a network and can provide certain
services. Web hosting is a specific use of this broader concept in relation to websites.

Different types of hosting can be used to publish a website. **Shared hosting**
means that multiple websites use the same server resources and is an economical
option for small-scale websites. **VPS hosting** provides more control and resources
through a virtual private server structure. A **dedicated server** is a model in
which an entire physical server is reserved for a single user. **Cloud hosting**
is a hosting model where resources are used more flexibly and scalably through cloud
infrastructure.

Hosting options can also differ by operating system. One of the most common options
is **Linux hosting**, which is frequently used with technologies such as PHP, MySQL
and WordPress. **Windows hosting** may be preferred for projects that require ASP.
NET, MSSQL and Microsoft-based technologies. Therefore, when choosing hosting, price
should not be the only criterion; the programming language, database, CMS and technical
requirements of the website should also be considered.

When choosing a good hosting company, performance, security, support quality and
reliability are important criteria. Server speed, uptime rate, backup service, SSL
support, security measures, technical support response time and scalability should
be evaluated carefully. Especially for e-commerce websites, corporate websites or
high-traffic projects, hosting quality can directly affect user experience. A slow
or frequently interrupted hosting infrastructure can negatively affect both user
satisfaction and SEO performance.

When selecting a hosting company, user reviews, references, support channels and
service scope should be examined. Offering a low price alone is not enough. It is
important that the technical support team works quickly and solution-oriented, provides
proper information during outages and is prepared for security issues. Disk space,
traffic limits, email accounts, database support, control panel and backup options
included in the hosting package should also be compared.

In summary, a **host** is a computer or server that provides services on a network,
while **hosting** is the service of storing website files on such servers. For a
website to be published quickly, securely and without interruption, the right hosting
infrastructure should be selected. When choosing hosting, the project’s technical
needs, traffic expectations, security requirements, support quality and scalability
should be evaluated together.
