# Keyword Research

**Keyword research** is the process of analysing which words and phrases users search
for in search engines. It is one of the core stages of SEO, but it is not done only
to add keywords into a text. Proper keyword research helps identify user needs, 
search intent, competition level, content opportunities and commercial potential.
For this reason, keyword research is a critical part of SEO strategy that affects
content, technical planning and business outcomes.

A keyword represents the queries users type into search engines. These queries can
consist of a single word, several words, questions or even long phrases. For example,“
washing machine,” “washing machine prices,” “which washing machine is the quietest”
and “9 kg inverter washing machine recommendation” are different types of keywords.
Each of these queries carries different signals about the user’s need and their 
position in the buying journey.

Keywords can help search engines understand what a page is about, but in modern 
SEO, keyword repetition alone is not enough. The content should answer search intent,
provide comprehensive information, offer real value to users and be presented in
a trustworthy structure. Having a keyword appear in an “ideal amount” within the
text does not guarantee rankings. SEO success depends on many factors, including
content quality, technical accessibility, site authority, user experience, competition
and SERP structure.

The first step in keyword research is usually identifying seed keywords. **Seed 
keywords** are the most basic expressions related to the business, product, service
or topic. For example, for an e-commerce website selling mobile phone accessories,“
phone accessories,” “phone case,” “iPhone accessories,” “charging cable” and “screen
protector” can be seed keywords. These terms provide a starting point for building
broader keyword sets.

After seed keywords are defined, their variations, subtopics, question formats and
long-tail queries are researched. For example, “washing machine” may be a core keyword.
In addition, queries such as “washing machine models,” “washing machine prices,”“
best washing machine,” “energy-efficient washing machine” or “washer dryer recommendation”
can be evaluated based on user needs. This structure helps create a more comprehensive
content strategy instead of relying on a single keyword.

Looking only at search volume is not enough in keyword research. Search volume shows
how often a keyword is searched on average during a certain period, but it does 
not explain whether that keyword is valuable for the business. For example, “sports
shoes” may have high search volume, but it is highly competitive and user intent
is broad. In contrast, a more specific query such as “women’s running shoes size
38” may have lower search volume but stronger purchase intent.

This is where **search intent** becomes critical. A user may search to get information,
compare products, check prices, make a purchase or reach a specific brand. “What
is SEO” is an informational query, while “SEO agency pricing” has more commercial
intent. “Nike sports shoes” is a brand-focused query. “Best sports shoe models” 
may indicate comparison or research intent. A good keyword strategy separates these
intents and defines the right content type for each query.

Keywords are often grouped as head, body and long-tail keywords. **Head keywords**
are short, broad and high-volume terms. Examples include “shoes,” “phone,” “hotel”
or “insurance.” These keywords may have high traffic potential, but competition 
is usually strong and user intent is often unclear. For this reason, focusing only
on head keywords is usually not an efficient strategy for new or lower-authority
websites.

**Body keywords** are more specific than head keywords and usually consist of two
or three words. Examples include “sports shoe prices,” “phone case models,” “Istanbul
hotel recommendations” or “digital marketing agency.” These keywords often provide
more balanced opportunities in terms of search volume and intent clarity. They play
an important role in category pages, service pages and comprehensive guide content.

**Long-tail keywords** are longer, more specific queries that often have lower search
volume. Examples include “comfortable heels for graduation,” “Huawei original silicone
phone case,” “accounting software for small businesses” or “how to improve Google
Ads lead quality.” These queries may be searched less frequently, but they usually
express the user’s need more clearly and can therefore have higher conversion potential.

Competition level should also be analysed during keyword research. A keyword having
high search volume does not mean it will be easy to gain visibility for it. If search
results are dominated by large brands, strong content websites, marketplaces or 
high-authority competitors, ranking for that keyword may be difficult. Therefore,
keyword selection should include SERP analysis, reviewing the type of existing results,
content quality, domain strength and user intent.

SERP analysis is one of the most important parts of keyword research. The results
shown on Google for a keyword reveal what type of content users are likely expecting.
If product category pages dominate the results, the user probably has shopping intent.
If blog posts, guides or “People also ask” sections appear, informational intent
may be stronger. Producing content based only on search volume without this analysis
can lead to targeting the keyword with the wrong page type.

Commercial value should also be considered in keyword research. Some keywords can
bring high traffic but have limited potential to generate sales or leads. Other 
keywords may have lower volume but higher conversion value. For example, “what is
CRM” is an informational query, while “B2B CRM software pricing” is closer to a 
sales decision. Therefore, keywords should be grouped according to awareness, consideration
and conversion stages.

Various tools can be used during the keyword research process. Google Ads Keyword
Planner, Google Search Console, Google Trends, Semrush, Ahrefs, Keyword Tool, Ubersuggest
and similar tools can provide keyword ideas, search volumes, competition estimates
and trend data. Google search suggestions, related searches and question areas shown
on the SERP can also be used as free research sources. However, tool data should
be treated as directional insight, not absolute truth.

The output of keyword research should not be only a list of words. Keywords should
be grouped by topic clusters, page types and user intent. For example, queries such
as “washing machine prices,” “washing machine models” and “9 kg washing machine”
can be evaluated for a category page. Queries such as “how to clean a washing machine”
or “why does a washing machine not spin” are more suitable for blog or guide content.
This distinction helps build the right content architecture.

Semantic keywords are also important for content quality. Instead of repeating only
the main keyword, the content should naturally cover related concepts and subtopics.
For example, in content about “SEO,” related concepts such as “Google rankings,”“
organic traffic,” “technical SEO,” “content optimization,” “backlinks,” “search 
intent” and “Search Console” can strengthen the context. This approach helps explain
the topic more comprehensively without keyword stuffing.

Keyword research should be updated regularly. User search behaviour, trends, competition,
product categories and SERP structures can change over time. A keyword that is valuable
today may lose importance a few months later, or a new query group may emerge. Therefore,
keyword research should not be treated as a one-time task, but as a regularly updated
part of SEO strategy.

In summary, **keyword research** is a strategic SEO process used to understand what
users search for, why they search and which content can answer those searches. A
successful keyword research process evaluates search volume, competition, search
intent, long-tail opportunities, SERP analysis, commercial value and content architecture
together. When done correctly, it does not only help create SEO-friendly text; it
helps connect the right user with the right content.
