# Mockup

A **mockup** is a visual draft or presentation model created to show how a product,
interface, package, printed material or digital design will appear to the end user.
It is used to present a design in a realistic context or in a form close to its
final appearance. This allows the design to be evaluated more concretely before
production, printing or development begins. Mockups are widely used in graphic design,
web design, mobile app design, brand identity, packaging design and advertising
projects.

One of the main advantages of mockups is that they show how a design will look in
a real usage environment. For example, a logo can be presented not only on a white
background but also on a business card, signboard, package, T-shirt, website or
mobile screen. This helps both designers and clients make visual decisions more
accurately. Mockups are especially useful in presentation stages because they make
the design look more professional and easier to understand.

There are many paid and free mockup templates available online. Different mockup
files can be used for business cards, brochures, posters, billboards, packaging,
book covers, T-shirts, mugs, computer screens, phone screens and website presentations.
These templates can usually be edited in design tools such as Photoshop, Figma,
Sketch, Adobe XD or similar software. Designers can quickly create realistic presentations
by placing their own visuals, logos or interfaces into the relevant areas.

Mockup is often mentioned together with wireframe and prototype in the design process,
but these concepts do not mean the same thing. A **wireframe** is a low-detail structure
that shows the basic page layout, content areas and functional skeleton of a website
or application. A mockup is the more visually developed version of this structure,
including colours, typography, visual style, icons, spacing and brand identity.
A prototype is a more dynamic model that allows users to click, move between screens
and test interactions.

For example, when a new website is designed, a wireframe may first be created to
show the page structure. Then brand colours, fonts, images, button styles and content
placements are added to create the mockup. After that, a prototype may be prepared
to test user flows. This sequence does not have to be exactly the same in every
project, but in general, a mockup is an important intermediate stage where the visual
design becomes clear.

Mockups are also highly useful in product design. For example, a T-shirt brand can
use a ready-made T-shirt mockup file instead of physically producing every new print
design. The design can be placed into the defined area to show how the product will
look on a real model. This saves time and makes it easier to evaluate the design
before production. Similarly, mug, bag, package, label and box designs can also
be presented through mockups.

Mockups are commonly used in advertising and corporate communication as well. A
billboard design can be shown on a real outdoor advertising surface. A brochure
design can be presented in its folded form, a business card can be shown on a desk
and a mobile app interface can be displayed on a phone screen. This allows the design
to be evaluated not only as a flat file but also within a context close to real
use.

In summary, a **mockup** is an important design tool that makes design ideas more
tangible and provides a visual presentation close to the final user experience.
When used correctly, it supports design decisions, strengthens client presentations,
reduces pre-production errors and helps present a brand’s visual identity more clearly.
However, a mockup is usually a static visual; prototype work may be needed to test
real user interaction.
