# Pattern Recognition

**Pattern recognition** is a field of machine learning concerned with identifying,
analysing and interpreting recurring structures within data. It enables computer
systems to detect patterns in complex datasets and classify information automatically.

Pattern recognition systems use algorithms and statistical methods to identify similarities,
differences and meaningful relationships within data. Their primary purpose is to
recognise existing structures and extract useful information from them.

The data analysed through pattern recognition may take many forms, including numerical
data, images, audio, text and other digital content. Because of this flexibility,
pattern recognition is used across a wide range of industries and applications.

Common examples include image processing, fingerprint recognition, speech recognition,
document analysis, facial recognition and medical imaging. In each of these areas,
the system analyses input data and determines whether it matches a known category,
structure or pattern.

A basic pattern recognition process converts raw data into a format that a machine
can analyse. The resulting information is then classified or grouped according to
its characteristics.

Pattern recognition systems can identify both known patterns and previously unseen
structures within a dataset. Depending on the method used, they may assign data
to predefined categories or discover similarities without relying on existing labels.

A typical **pattern recognition process** includes the following stages:

**Data Preprocessing:** Irrelevant, incomplete or noisy information is removed,
and the data is converted into a suitable format for analysis.

**Feature Extraction:** Important characteristics are identified and separated from
the processed data. These features help the system distinguish between different
patterns or categories.

**Model Training:** A model is created and trained using the extracted features
and available examples.

**Classification:** The trained model analyses previously unseen data and assigns
it to the most appropriate category or group.

Pattern recognition may involve supervised learning, in which a model is trained
using labelled examples, or unsupervised learning, in which the system identifies
natural groupings and structures within the data.

By enabling machines to understand and interpret patterns, pattern recognition plays
an important role in data analysis, automation, computer vision, artificial intelligence
and intelligent decision-making systems.
