# Position Zero

**Position Zero** is an SEO term used to describe highly visible search result blocks
that appear above or near the top of Google’s organic results. The term is most
commonly associated with the Featured Snippet. A Featured Snippet is a special search
result format that provides a short, direct and summarised answer to a user’s query.
It usually includes text taken from a relevant web page, together with the page
title and URL information.

A Featured Snippet is designed to help users reach information more quickly. For
example, in searches such as “What is SEO?”, “How to cook rice?” or “What does robots.
txt do?”, Google may show a short section from a page that it considers to answer
the question clearly. This result may appear as a paragraph, list, table or step-
by-step explanation. However, not every query triggers a Featured Snippet, and Google
decides algorithmically which page is shown in this area.

Position Zero is considered important in SEO because it can provide strong visibility
in search results. Users can see the page title, short answer and link directly
on the results page. This may increase brand awareness, strengthen perceived authority
and improve click-through rate for some queries. However, it does not always guarantee
more traffic. In some cases, users may get the answer directly from the search results
page and complete their search without clicking through to the website.

Visual content may sometimes appear within the Featured Snippet area. However, these
visuals do not always come from the same web page as the text. Google may combine
text and visual elements from different sources or change the result format depending
on the query. For this reason, it is important to structure not only the text but
also images, headings, image alt text and overall content quality carefully. Still,
the appearance of an image or video is not guaranteed.

To increase the chance of appearing in Position Zero, a page should first provide
a clear answer to the user’s search intent. The content should include a short and
understandable response, followed by a more detailed explanation of the topic. A
well-organised structure with H2 and H3 headings, lists, tables and simple step-
by-step explanations can improve Featured Snippet potential. However, the title
does not always need to be phrased as a question. What matters is that the content
answers the query clearly and sufficiently.

Keyword usage in content targeting Position Zero should be natural. The content
should not only answer one specific question but also cover related subtopics. For
example, a page answering “What is SEO?” may also discuss how SEO works, on-page
SEO, off-page SEO, technical SEO and basic implementation steps. This approach can
help search engines evaluate the content as more comprehensive and contextually
relevant.

Technical SEO and page experience are also important for earning Featured Snippet
visibility. The page should be crawlable, fast-loading, mobile-friendly, properly
structured with headings and supported by trustworthy information. Structured data
can help search engines understand certain content types better, but it does not
guarantee a Featured Snippet. Since Google selects this area algorithmically, website
owners cannot directly control whether a page appears there.

In summary, **Position Zero** is a valuable SEO opportunity that can provide high
visibility in search results. However, it cannot be achieved simply by writing question-
style headings or adding short answers. It requires a strong understanding of search
intent, clear explanations, well-structured content, reliable information and solid
technical SEO health. Properly prepared content can increase the chance of Featured
Snippet visibility and strengthen a brand’s authority in organic search results.
