# Real-Time Interaction Management **(RTIM)**

**Real-Time Interaction Management**, commonly abbreviated as RTIM, is a marketing
technology and customer experience approach used to monitor, analyse and respond
to customer interactions as they occur. The correct expansion of RTIM is “Real-Time
Interaction Management.”

RTIM helps organisations deliver personalised customer experiences by using real-
time data, **predictive modelling** and **machine learning**. Its purpose is to
communicate with customers through the most appropriate channel, provide relevant
offers or information and improve customer satisfaction, engagement and loyalty.

Many businesses use RTIM to identify important or high-risk moments during the customer
journey. For example, the system may detect when a customer is likely to abandon
a purchase, requires additional information or may respond positively to a specific
offer.

A **real-time decision engine** forms the foundation of an RTIM system. It monitors
customer interactions across multiple channels and determines the most appropriate
response based on the available data, customer history, current behaviour and relevant
business rules.

These channels may include websites, mobile applications, call centres, email, social
media and other customer touchpoints. By analysing information across these channels,
RTIM can generate personalised responses that reflect the customer’s immediate needs,
behaviour and context.

The term RTIM is widely attributed to Forrester analyst Rob Brosman, who introduced
it in 2012. In 2015, Forrester analyst Rusty Warner further developed the concept
and defined its essential capabilities. These included recognising the customer,
understanding their historical and current context, selecting the most appropriate
action, delivering content through relevant touchpoints and capturing interaction
data for measurement and optimisation.

The main objective of RTIM is to improve the customer experience by delivering the
right message, offer or action at the right time and through the right channel.
Forrester describes RTIM as enterprise marketing technology that enables contextually
relevant experiences at appropriate moments throughout the customer lifecycle.

For example, when a customer views a product on an e-commerce website, an RTIM system
can analyse that interaction together with previous behaviour and customer data.
It may then provide a discount, recommend a related product or present a personalised
offer. This can improve the customer experience while also supporting conversion
and sales growth.

As digital marketing and customer experience technologies continue to develop, RTIM
systems are becoming increasingly advanced. Three capabilities are particularly
important:

 * **Speed and agility**, allowing systems to respond to customer behaviour without
   significant delay.
 * Data-driven personalisation, enabling experiences to reflect individual customer
   needs and preferences.
 * **Cross-channel optimisation**, ensuring that interactions remain consistent
   and relevant across different touchpoints.

RTIM is therefore not limited to generating immediate offers. It also supports next-
best-action and next-best-experience decisions, helping organisations continuously
improve both customer outcomes and business performance.
