# Secure Sockets Layer **(SSL)**

**SSL** stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is an older security protocol that enables
an encrypted connection between a browser and a web server. In modern technical
usage, SSL has been replaced by the more secure and up-to-date **TLS**, or Transport
Layer Security, protocol. However, the term “SSL certificate” is still widely used
in the industry and in everyday language.

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that allows a website to establish a
secure connection over HTTPS. When a user visits a website, data is exchanged between
the browser and the server. When this data exchange is encrypted through HTTPS,
it becomes much harder for third parties to read or modify the transmitted information.
For this reason, the SSL/TLS structure is critically important for websites that
process personal data, account information, payment details or form submissions.

The main purpose of an SSL certificate is to increase the security of communication
between the user and the website. Sensitive information such as name, surname, address,
phone number, email, password or credit card details is protected through encryption
while being transmitted over the internet. This helps prevent malicious actors from
easily reading the information. However, an SSL certificate alone does not guarantee
that a website is trustworthy, honest or free from fraud. It only shows that the
connection is encrypted and that the certificate has been issued for the relevant
domain.

One of the easiest ways to understand whether a website has an SSL certificate is
to check the address bar. Websites using HTTPS usually start with `https://` and
display a lock icon in the browser. The “S” in HTTPS stands for Secure. However,
users should not rely only on the lock icon. They should also make sure that the
domain name is written correctly, that the website really belongs to the brand they
intend to use and that the page is not a fake copy.

The SSL/TLS structure works with digital certificates and encryption keys. A private
key is used on the server side, while a public key is associated with the certificate.
When the connection is established, the browser verifies the certificate, creates
a secure session and transfers data in encrypted form. This structure helps ensure
confidentiality, confirms that the data has not been altered during transmission
and verifies that the user is connecting to the correct server.

For e-commerce websites, banks, public institutions, healthcare platforms, membership
systems and payment pages, SSL/TLS usage is a basic security requirement. Transmitting
sensitive data such as credit card information, identity details or account passwords
over HTTP can create serious security risks. For this reason, all websites that
collect user data should use HTTPS. Modern browsers may also mark pages that do
not use HTTPS as “not secure.”

SSL certificates can have different validation levels. Domain Validation, or DV
certificates, verify only domain ownership. Organization Validation, or OV certificates,
verify both the domain and certain organisation details. Extended Validation, or
EV certificates, go through more comprehensive validation processes. Regardless
of the certificate type, the most important point for users is that the connection
is secure and that the website is served through the correct domain.

SSL/TLS usage is also important for SEO. Google considers HTTPS as part of a secure
web experience, and secure connections are an important technical requirement in
modern web standards. However, an SSL certificate alone does not guarantee ranking
success. It should be evaluated together with technical SEO, quality content, page
speed, mobile compatibility, user experience and a trustworthy site structure. HTTPS
is one of the basic technical standards of SEO, but it is not the entire strategy.

After installing an SSL certificate on a website, technical checks should be completed
correctly. 301 redirects from HTTP to HTTPS should be created, canonical URLs should
point to the HTTPS version, sitemap and Search Console settings should be updated,
and images, CSS, JavaScript and other resources should load over HTTPS. Otherwise,
mixed content issues may occur. This can lead to browser warnings and damage user
trust.

In summary, an **SSL certificate**, together with the modern TLS infrastructure,
is a fundamental security element that enables a secure and encrypted connection
between a website and its users. It is essential for websites that process personal
data and payment information. However, SSL only secures the connection; the quality
of the website’s content, brand trustworthiness, data processing policies and overall
user safety should also be evaluated separately.
