# Session Duration

**Session duration** is a web analytics concept that refers to how much time a user
spends on a website or application during a specific session. To understand this
metric, it is useful to first define a session. A session is the period of interaction
between a user and a website or application within a defined time frame. When a 
user visits a site, navigates between pages, reads content or performs certain actions,
these activities can be evaluated within a session. Session duration therefore helps
analyse how long users engage with a website.

In analytics tools such as Google Analytics, sessions are started and ended according
to specific rules. In traditional measurement models, a session begins when a user
arrives on the website. If the user does not perform any interaction for a certain
period, the session may time out. In many analytics systems, this timeout is set
to 30 minutes by default, although it can be configured differently. If the user
takes action again after this timeout, a new session may begin.

During the Universal Analytics period, session calculation also included some additional
rules. For example, sessions could restart at midnight or when the campaign source
changed. In GA4, the measurement model is event-based, and sessions are tracked 
through the `session_start` event and parameters such as `ga_session_id`. For this
reason, it is important to distinguish between the logic of different Analytics 
versions when interpreting session duration and engagement time.

Session duration can help understand the total time users spend on a website, but
it does not always provide a perfect measurement. In older measurement models, if
a user opened a single page, read it for a long time and then left without performing
another interaction, the session duration could appear lower than it actually was.
For example, if a user reads a blog post for 10 minutes and exits without visiting
another page, the system may not measure that time accurately. Therefore, session
duration alone is not enough to understand user interest.

With GA4, metrics such as **engagement time** and **average engagement time** have
become more important for evaluating user interaction. Engagement time focuses on
measuring the time during which the user is actively engaged with the page or application.
This approach aims to understand not just whether the page is open, but whether 
the user is actually active. For this reason, GA4 reports often provide more meaningful
analysis through engagement time and engagement rate rather than only session duration.

In general terms, average session duration is calculated by dividing the total duration
of all sessions by the number of sessions. However, this metric should be interpreted
carefully. A few very long sessions can increase the average, while single-page 
visits may make duration appear low. Average values may therefore be insufficient
to explain the full picture of user behaviour. It is healthier to evaluate session
duration together with median time, engagement rate, page views, conversion rate
and content-level performance.

To increase session duration, a website should provide real value to users. Content
should match search intent, pages should load quickly, the design should be readable,
internal links should be structured properly and users should be able to reach relevant
content easily. On e-commerce websites, clear product details, properly working 
filters and a smooth cart and checkout process can also positively affect session
quality.

In summary, **session duration** is an important metric that helps measure how long
users interact with a website. However, it should not be evaluated as a standalone
success indicator. A user may stay on a website for a long time because they are
satisfied, but they may also stay longer because they cannot find what they are 
looking for. Therefore, session duration should be analysed together with engagement
time, conversion rate, bounce rate, page views, user flow and revenue metrics.
