# Spam

**Spam** refers to unwanted messages sent without the recipient’s request or permission
through email, SMS, social media, messaging applications or comment sections. These
messages are often sent in bulk to a large number of users. Spam may include commercial
advertising, campaign announcements, fake offers, fraud attempts, phishing links
or attachments containing malicious software. For this reason, spam is not only
an annoying type of communication but also a potential digital security risk.

Email services usually move suspicious messages to the spam or junk folder. Product
advertisements that the user is not interested in, campaign emails sent without
permission, commercial messages from unknown organisations or messages that appear
to come from a bank where the user has no account can be examples of spam. However,
not every promotional email is spam. If the user has previously given permission,
created an account or agreed to receive communications, such messages may fall under
legitimate commercial communication.

Spam messages may sometimes be sent for fraudulent purposes. Messages that imitate
banks, delivery companies, public institutions or well-known brands may ask users
to click a link, enter a password or download an attachment. These messages can
be part of phishing attacks. Users should avoid clicking links, downloading attachments,
sharing personal information or replying to suspicious messages.

Several signals may be used to determine whether a message is spam. Sender reputation,
IP address, domain reliability, bulk sending behaviour, message language, links,
attachments and user complaints are among these signals. Email authentication mechanisms
such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC also help determine whether the sender is genuinely
authorised to use the domain they claim to represent. Spam detection therefore relies
on both technical and behavioural data, not only on the visible message content.

To protect against spam, messages from unknown senders should be reviewed carefully.
Suspicious emails can be reported as spam before opening or interacting with them.
Users should not click untrusted links, download attachments or share personal information.
They may use unsubscribe links for unwanted commercial emails, but in messages from
untrusted senders it may be safer to mark the message as spam instead of clicking
any link.

Spam also creates a serious reputation risk for brands. Bulk messages sent without
permission, without proper targeting or to irrelevant users may seem low-cost in
the short term, but they can damage brand perception in the long term. Messages
marked as spam by users may reduce sender reputation and make it harder for future
emails to reach the inbox. For this reason, proper targeting, clear permission,
transparent communication and quality content are essential elements of healthy
email marketing.
