# Temporarily Redirect – 302

A **302 redirect** is an HTTP status code used to temporarily redirect one URL to
another URL. A 302 code indicates that the requested resource is currently available
at a different address, but that this change is not permanent. For this reason,
a 302 redirect is used when a page or website is expected to continue being used
from its original URL in the future. For permanent URL changes, a 301 redirect should
be used instead of a 302.

The main purpose of a 302 redirect is to temporarily send the user to a more suitable
or accessible page. For example, a campaign page may be temporarily moved to a different
version, a product may temporarily be presented on an alternative page, or users
may be redirected to a temporary page based on location. In these cases, a 302 tells
search engines and browsers that the original URL has not permanently changed.

A 302 redirect is often confused with a 301 redirect. A **301 redirect** means permanent
relocation and indicates that the new URL has replaced the old one. A **302 redirect**
means temporary redirection and indicates that the old URL can still be considered
the main address. This distinction is important for SEO. If the wrong redirect type
is used, search engines may interpret the page move incorrectly.

From an SEO perspective, 302 redirects should be used carefully. For short-term
and genuinely temporary redirects, a 302 can be the right choice. However, if a
page has permanently moved but continues to redirect with a 302 for a long time,
it can create confusion. Search engines may eventually treat some long-running 302
redirects as permanent, but relying on that behaviour is not a good strategy. For
permanent changes, using a 301 directly is the healthier method.

A 302 redirect does not guarantee that a page’s search value will be preserved without
loss. It helps signal to search engines that the change is temporary. However, the
SEO impact can vary depending on the duration of the redirect, the relevance of
the destination page, site architecture, crawl frequency, user experience and how
search engines interpret the redirect. Therefore, a 302 should only be used in the
right scenario and for a controlled period.

A 302 is not always the best solution for maintenance. If a site or page will be
unavailable for a short time and users cannot be served temporarily, a 503 Service
Unavailable status code may often be more appropriate. A 503 indicates that the
server is temporarily unable to provide service and, when used with the right headers,
can show search engines that the issue is not permanent. Redirecting a page under
maintenance to an unrelated page with a 302 can weaken both user experience and
SEO signals.

A 302 redirect is more suitable for temporary URL changes. For example, redirecting
users to a temporary campaign landing page during a campaign period, sending a portion
of users to an alternative page during an A/B test, or applying short-term regional
redirection can be valid 302 use cases. For an out-of-stock product, temporarily
redirecting users to a relevant alternative product or category page may also be
considered in some cases. However, this decision should take into account the page’s
SEO value, user expectation and whether the product will return.

The destination URL in a 302 redirect must be relevant. If a user wants to reach
a specific product, category or service page but is redirected to an unrelated homepage,
it creates a poor experience. From a search engine perspective, there should also
be alignment between the old URL and the new URL in terms of topic, content and
user intent. For this reason, the redirect target should be the most meaningful
temporary equivalent of the original page.

A 302 redirect can be applied to an entire website or to individual pages, but both
cases require careful planning. If an entire site is temporarily redirected to another
domain or subdomain, the duration, reason, user-facing message and SEO impact should
be evaluated in advance. For individual pages, it should be clearly defined which
URL redirects to which destination. Random mass redirects can harm user experience
and crawl efficiency.

Technically, a 302 redirect can be implemented in different ways. On Apache servers,
it can be configured through the `.htaccess` file. It can also be implemented through
Nginx configuration, application code, CMS plugins, CDN rules or hosting panels.
In WordPress, Shopify or custom-built infrastructures, different tools may be used
for redirect management. The important point is to test that the redirect actually
returns a 302 status code.

A 302 redirect is also similar to a 307 redirect. Both indicate temporary redirection.
However, 307 Temporary Redirect more explicitly requires the HTTP method to be preserved.
In other words, a POST request should remain POST, and a GET request should remain
GET. Because some older client behaviours with 302 redirects may convert POST requests
into GET requests, 307 can be a more accurate option for form submissions or API
flows.

302 redirects should be checked regularly. A temporary redirect can be forgotten
over time and remain active for months. This can create problems for site architecture
and SEO. For this reason, technical SEO audits should review which pages return
302, whether those redirects are still necessary, whether the destination pages
work correctly and whether redirect chains are being created.

Redirect chains should also be avoided. If one URL redirects to another URL and
then to another, page speed and crawl efficiency can be negatively affected. Even
if the redirect is temporary, the old URL should point directly to the temporary
destination page whenever possible. If the redirect has effectively become permanent,
the structure should be reviewed and changed to a 301 when appropriate.

A 302 redirect should also be supported with the right message for user experience.
If users understand why they have arrived at a different page, the experience becomes
clearer. Especially in maintenance, campaign, temporary access or regional redirection
scenarios, the page copy should manage user expectations. Otherwise, users may think
they have landed on the wrong page and leave the site.

In summary, a **302 redirect** is an HTTP status code indicating that a URL is temporarily
redirected to another URL. It should be used when the old URL is expected to be
used again in the future. A 301 should be used for permanent moves, while 302 or,
when needed, 307 should be used for temporary redirects. When used correctly, a
302 redirect sends users to a relevant temporary page and tells search engines that
the change is not permanent. However, long-term, irrelevant or incorrectly configured
302 redirects can create SEO and user experience problems.
