# Unicorn

A **unicorn** is a term used in the startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem to describe
a privately held company valued at 1 billion dollars or more. The term refers to
the mythical single-horned creature and was originally used to describe rare, fast-
growing startups. It is not a formal legal classification, but it is widely used
in the investment ecosystem to describe company valuation and growth scale. To be
called a unicorn, a startup is generally expected to remain privately held and receive
a valuation above 1 billion dollars in investment rounds.

Startups often begin with small teams, limited resources and an innovative business
idea. Some are founded in university environments, small offices or modest settings
such as garages. However, strong product-market fit, a scalable business model,
rapid growth and investor interest can allow them to reach high valuations within
a relatively short time. When a company passes the 1 billion dollar valuation threshold,
it may be described as a unicorn startup.

Unicorn startups commonly emerge in fast-scaling sectors such as technology, fintech,
e-commerce, gaming, artificial intelligence, mobility, health technologies and software.
Their defining feature is not only their high valuation. They are also expected
to have a large user base, strong growth potential, investor backing and the ability
to expand into international markets. For this reason, unicorn status is often seen
as an indicator of market impact and growth expectations.

Unicorn companies are also important because of the economic value and employment
they create. Many unicorns can open offices in different countries, employ thousands
of people and reshape competition in their industries. Startups in social media,
transportation, payment systems, online shopping and digital services have often
been associated with this concept. However, once a startup goes public or is acquired
by a larger company, it is usually considered a former unicorn rather than an active
private unicorn.

The countries with the highest number of unicorn startups may change over time.
The United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, Germany, Israel, France and
Indonesia are among the countries that may stand out with strong startup ecosystems.
Access to venture capital, technical talent, large markets and entrepreneurial culture
can contribute to the growth of unicorn companies. However, unicorn status alone
does not guarantee that a company is profitable, sustainable or successful in the
long term.

When a startup reaches a valuation of more than 10 billion dollars, the term **decacorn**
is used. In rarer cases, companies valued at 100 billion dollars or more may be
described as hectocorns. These classifications indicate valuation levels, but they
do not fully explain the health of the business model, revenue structure, profitability
or market position. When analysed correctly, **unicorn startups** are useful indicators
for understanding innovation, scalable business models and the development of the
investment ecosystem.
