# Unique Visitor

A **unique visitor** is a web analytics metric that refers to different users who
visit a website within a specific time period. The purpose of this metric is to
count the same user only once, even if they visit the website multiple times. For
example, if a user visits the same website 20 times within a month, they may be
counted as one unique visitor but several visits or sessions. For this reason, unique
visitors should not be confused with total visits.

Unique visitor measurement is not based only on IP addresses. IP addresses can change,
multiple people may use the same IP address or the same person may access a website
from different networks. Modern analytics tools therefore usually rely on cookies,
browser identifiers, device information, client IDs or login-based user IDs. However,
these methods are not perfect either, because users can delete cookies, use different
devices or limit tracking through privacy settings.

Total visits show how many times users came to the website, while unique visitors
provide a closer estimate of how many different users visited it. For example, a
website may receive visits from 100 different users during a specific period, and
those users may generate 400 sessions in total. In this case, 100 represents unique
visitors, while 400 represents total visits or sessions. This distinction is important
for understanding both audience reach and repeat visit behaviour.

The concept of a returning visitor is also related to unique visitors. A returning
visitor is a user who has visited the website before and later comes back. However,
if a user deletes cookies, uses a different browser or visits from another device,
the analytics system may identify them as a new user. For this reason, new and returning
visitor reports should be interpreted as user behaviour detected by the analytics
tool, not as a perfect count of real individuals.

In tools such as Google Analytics, the concept of unique visitors may appear under
different names depending on the platform version and reporting logic. In Universal
Analytics, metrics such as Users and New Users were commonly used, while Google
Analytics 4 focuses more on user-based metrics such as Active Users, Total Users
and New Users. Each of these metrics may follow a different calculation logic. Therefore,
reports should clearly state which metric is being used and which date range is
being analysed.

Unique visitor data can be used for goal setting, media planning, advertising pricing,
content performance analysis and user growth measurement. Understanding how many
different users a website reaches can provide a more meaningful view than looking
only at total sessions. However, bot traffic, spam visits, cookie restrictions and
measurement gaps can affect this data. When interpreted correctly, the **unique
visitor** metric helps analyse a website’s real reach and audience size more effectively.
