# User Generated Content **(UGC)**

**User Generated Content**, commonly abbreviated as UGC, refers to content created
by users, customers or community members rather than by brands themselves. This
content may take the form of social media posts, comments, product reviews, forum
entries, dictionary-style platform posts, photos, videos, blog posts or experience-
based content. The defining characteristic of UGC is that the content is created
by the user, not directly by the brand.

UGC is especially common on social media platforms. A user sharing an Instagram
post about a brand, describing an experience on X, publishing a product usage video
on TikTok or posting a product review on YouTube can all be examples of user generated
content. These contents may appear completely organically, or they may be encouraged
through campaigns, contests, hashtag activities or brand collaborations. Even when
content is incentivised, it can still be considered UGC if it is created by the
user.

User generated content is not limited to social media posts. Forums, complaint platforms,
dictionary-style websites, product review sections, app store reviews and e-commerce
ratings are also important examples of UGC. When a customer rates a purchased product,
writes about their experience or adds a product photo, this can influence the decision-
making process of other users. For this reason, UGC is a valuable type of content
for brands, especially in terms of trust, social proof and purchase decision support.

UGC can be written, visual or video-based. For example, a customer who orders a
bicycle and shares the unboxing on YouTube, explains the assembly process and describes
the usage experience is creating user generated video content. Similarly, a user
reviewing a newly purchased phone, sharing an experience about a gym or adding a
photo review to an e-commerce product page can also be considered UGC. These contents
may be perceived as more personal and experience-based than the brand’s own advertising
messages.

One of the strongest aspects of user generated content is its ability to build trust
among potential customers. Users often pay attention not only to brand messages
but also to comments from people who have actually experienced the product or service.
User reviews and experience-based content can play an important role in answering
questions such as “Which phone should I buy?”, “Is this gym good?”, “Is this product
really high quality?” or “Is it safe to shop from this brand?” For this reason,
UGC can be considered an important social proof element that supports purchase decisions.

However, UGC is not always positive. Users may share their satisfaction with a brand,
but they may also share complaints, negative experiences or criticism. Therefore,
brands should not evaluate user content only as material with advertising value,
but also as a feedback source for understanding customer experience. Repeated complaints,
product issues or service failures should be analysed regularly.

There are also legal and ethical points that brands should consider when using UGC.
If a brand wants to use a user’s photo, video or comment in its own advertising,
website or social media account, permission is generally required. Copyright, personal
data protection, image usage rights, content involving children and platform rules
should all be taken into account. The fact that a user has shared content publicly
does not mean that the brand can use that content without limits.

In summary, **User Generated Content** is the general term for written, visual or
video content created by users about brands, products or services. When managed
correctly, it can increase brand trust, create social proof, strengthen community
engagement and support purchase decisions. However, a UGC strategy should not be
limited to collecting content; permission management, content quality, brand safety,
customer feedback and user experience should also be evaluated together.
