# WordPress

**WordPress** is an open-source content management system that was launched in 2003
and is widely used for building websites. It can be used to create blogs, corporate
websites, news platforms, portfolios and e-commerce websites. WordPress allows users
to add content, create pages, upload media and manage website design with less technical
effort. However, building a professional, secure and customised website still requires
basic technical understanding, proper configuration and regular maintenance.

When discussing WordPress, it is important to distinguish between WordPress.com
and WordPress.org. **WordPress.com** is a hosted and more managed platform that
includes hosting as part of the service. It is possible to create a website with
a free plan, but the site address will usually appear in a format such as example.
wordpress.com and some customisation options may be limited. Paid plans may be required
for a custom domain, more design flexibility, plugin access or commercial features.

**WordPress.org** is the platform where the open-source WordPress software can be
downloaded. With this option, the user purchases their own hosting service and domain
name, then installs WordPress on that infrastructure. WordPress.org offers greater
flexibility, plugin access, theme choice and technical customisation. However, security,
backups, performance, updates and maintenance are largely the responsibility of
the site owner or technical team.

One of the main advantages of WordPress is that it enables content management without
requiring users to write code. Its admin panel, theme options, block editor and
plugin ecosystem make it possible to create websites for different needs. Nevertheless,
WordPress is not a completely unlimited or risk-free system. Performance, security,
SEO, mobile compatibility and user experience depend heavily on choosing the right
theme, plugins and hosting structure.

WordPress has moved beyond being only a blogging platform and is now used for many
different types of websites. Corporate websites, publishing platforms, education
websites, community sites and e-commerce projects built with plugins such as WooCommerce
can all be developed with WordPress. Visual portfolio websites, campaign pages and
content marketing-focused platforms can also be created on this infrastructure.
This makes WordPress a flexible option for both small businesses and large-scale
publishing or brand websites.

Whether WordPress is the right choice depends on the needs of the project. WordPress.
com may be sufficient for a simple personal blog or a low-cost starter website.
WordPress.org may be more suitable for projects that require greater control, custom
design, advanced SEO, plugin freedom and technical flexibility. Whichever option
is chosen, a successful WordPress website requires security updates, regular backups,
fast hosting, a clean theme structure and high-quality content.
