A GTM Container Checker examines a web page to identify Google Tag Manager containers and other Google measurement tags found in its code. It can report GTM container IDs, GA4 measurement IDs, Universal Analytics properties and Google Ads tag IDs detected on the requested page. Google Tag Manager is a tag management system used to configure and deploy analytics, advertising and marketing tags through a web interface. A standard web implementation adds Tag Manager code snippets to the website, after which tags, triggers and variables can be managed through the container. Checking the installed IDs helps confirm that the expected container is present and identify outdated, duplicate or unexpected implementations. ## How to Check a Website for GTM Enter the complete URL of the page you want to analyse. The tool fetches the page, scans its code and lists the GTM containers and Google tag IDs it detects. Compare the reported IDs with the containers and measurement properties your website is expected to use. An unfamiliar ID may indicate an old implementation, a third- party integration or a container added accidentally. If an expected ID is missing, inspect the page template, consent configuration and tag-loading conditions. Different templates may contain different implementations, so checking only the homepage may not be sufficient. Review representative product, category, article, checkout, form and confirmation pages where applicable. ## Why GTM Checks Matter Measurement problems can remain unnoticed because they do not always create a visible error for website visitors. A missing container, incorrect measurement ID or duplicate tag can affect analytics data, advertising audiences and conversion reporting. The checker provides a quick first-stage review of the tags visible in the fetched page. However, finding a tag in the code does not by itself confirm that every trigger fires correctly or that data reaches the intended platform. Google Tag Manager Preview mode connects the website to Tag Assistant and shows which tags fired, their order, trigger status and the data being processed. Use it after the initial scan when runtime behaviour, consent conditions, data layer values or event delivery must be verified. ## When Should GTM Be Checked? Run a check after launching a website, changing templates, migrating domains, updating a consent management platform or modifying analytics and advertising integrations. It is also useful when reported traffic or conversions suddenly decline, duplicate events appear or a platform stops receiving data. Repeat the check across important page types and after major releases.
