# Hash Generator

Loading Hash Generator…

 1

## Enter your text

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of your input. The same input always yields
the same hash, which is why hashes are used to verify integrity and compare data
without exposing it.

 2

## Copy the generated hashes

The tool produces MD5 and SHA hashes at once, using the browser's Web Crypto API
where available. It runs entirely on your device, so your input stays private.

## What Is a Hash Generator?

A Hash Generator converts text or other input data into a fixed-length value known
as a hash, message digest, or digital fingerprint. The same input processed with
the same algorithm always produces the same result. Even a small change, such as
adding a space or changing one letter, creates a different hash value.

Hashing is a one-way operation rather than a form of encryption. An encrypted value
is designed to be decrypted with the correct key, while a hash is not intended to
be converted back into the original input. This property makes hashes useful for
comparing data and verifying integrity without displaying the original content.

The Hash Generator creates MD5 and SHA hashes for the text entered into the tool.
The values are generated directly in the browser, and the entered content is not
sent to a remote server.

## How to Generate a Hash

Enter or paste the text you want to process into the input field. The tool calculates
the available MD5 and SHA hash values and presents them in a format that can be
copied for use in another application, document, development environment, or verification
process.

Hash results are sensitive to every character in the input. Uppercase and lowercase
letters, spaces, punctuation marks, line breaks, and invisible trailing characters
can all produce a different value. When two hashes do not match, the original inputs
should be checked carefully for minor formatting differences.

Different algorithms create outputs of different lengths. For example, the SHA family
includes algorithms such as SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512, with the number referring
to the length of the resulting digest in bits.

## What Are Hashes Used For?

One of the most common uses of hashing is integrity verification. A hash can be
generated before a file or text is transferred and then calculated again after delivery.
Matching values provide strong evidence that the data has not changed during storage,
transmission, or processing.

Hashes can also be used to compare data without reviewing the full original content.
Developers may use them to detect duplicate records, identify changes, validate
cached data, create content-based identifiers, or compare configuration values.
Software publishers frequently provide file checksums so users can confirm that
a downloaded file matches the expected version.

Cryptographic hash functions are also used as components in digital signatures,
authentication mechanisms, and other security systems. In these cases, the choice
of algorithm and the surrounding implementation are important. Hashing alone does
not prove who created a value or protect data from every type of attack.

## MD5 and SHA Algorithms

MD5 produces a short and widely recognised hash that remains useful in some non-
security-sensitive workflows, such as identifying files or comparing legacy checksums.
However, published collision attacks mean that MD5 should not be used where cryptographic
collision resistance is required.

SHA refers to a family of hash algorithms rather than a single format. SHA-256,
SHA-384, and SHA-512 are commonly used when stronger cryptographic properties are
required. SHA-1 is considered vulnerable and should not be selected for new cryptographic
applications.

The correct algorithm depends on the purpose of the hash. A legacy system may require
MD5 or SHA-1 for compatibility, while a current security implementation should use
a modern algorithm and follow the requirements of the relevant platform or protocol.

## Can Hashes Be Used to Store Passwords?

A general-purpose hash generator should not be used as a complete password-storage
system. Applying a fast algorithm such as MD5 or SHA directly to a password produces
a deterministic value that may be vulnerable to guessing, lookup tables, and high-
speed brute-force attempts.

Secure password storage normally requires a dedicated password-hashing or key-derivation
function, together with a unique salt and an appropriate cost setting. A generated
MD5 or SHA value may be useful for testing, development, compatibility checks, and
integrity comparisons, but it should not be treated as a secure password database
implementation.

## Private Hash Generation in Your Browser

The tool performs hash generation locally on your device, using the browser’s cryptographic
capabilities where available. Since the input is processed in the browser, it does
not need to be uploaded to an external server.

Local processing is particularly useful when working with internal identifiers,
configuration values, unpublished text, test data, or other content that should
remain on the device. Once the hashes have been generated, the required result can
be copied and used in the relevant workflow.
