# JSON Formatter

Loading JSON Formatter…

 1

## Paste your JSON

Raw JSON from an API is often a single unreadable line. Pretty-printing it reveals
the structure and surfaces syntax errors that would otherwise break your code.

 2

## Copy the formatted JSON

The tool validates and re-indents your JSON with syntax highlighting, pointing out
where it is malformed. It all runs in your browser, so sensitive payloads never
leave the page.

## What Is a JSON Formatter?

A JSON Formatter converts compact, minified, or inconsistently structured JSON data
into a readable layout. It separates nested objects and arrays across multiple lines,
adds consistent indentation, and highlights the syntax so keys, values, brackets,
and data types are easier to distinguish.

JSON, or JavaScript Object Notation, is a text-based format commonly used to exchange
structured data between applications. It can represent strings, numbers, boolean
values, `null`, objects, and arrays. Objects contain name-value pairs, while arrays
contain an ordered series of values.

Although JSON is designed for machines to process efficiently, raw responses are
often delivered as a single line without indentation. This compact structure reduces
unnecessary characters but makes large payloads difficult for people to inspect,
edit, compare, or debug. Formatting reveals the hierarchy without changing the underlying
data.

## How to Format JSON

Paste the JSON data into the input field. The tool validates the syntax, applies
consistent indentation, and adds syntax highlighting to the formatted output. You
can then review the structure, correct any reported problems, and copy the result
for use in a code editor, API client, application, configuration file, or technical
document.

The formatted layout makes nested objects and arrays visually distinct. Each level
of the structure is indented according to its position, allowing you to identify
parent-child relationships and follow deeply nested data more easily.

Formatting is especially useful when examining API responses, webhook payloads,
analytics events, configuration files, log data, exported records, or JSON copied
from browser developer tools. Instead of manually adding line breaks and spaces,
the complete structure can be reorganised automatically.

## Why Should JSON Be Formatted?

Large JSON documents can contain many nested objects, arrays, and repeated fields.
When the entire payload appears on one line, it may be difficult to determine where
a section starts or ends, which value belongs to a particular key, or whether a
closing bracket is missing.

Pretty-printing exposes these relationships visually. Developers can navigate the
document more quickly, compare repeated records, locate specific properties, and
understand the shape of an unfamiliar API response with less effort.

Readable JSON also makes manual editing safer. When the hierarchy is clearly visible,
there is less risk of adding a property at the wrong level, deleting the wrong bracket,
or changing a value in a neighbouring object.

Formatted data is also easier to share during code reviews, debugging sessions,
support requests, integration discussions, and technical documentation. A consistently
organised payload helps everyone examining the data work from the same visible structure.

## JSON Formatting and Validation

Formatting and validation are closely related but serve different purposes. Formatting
changes the visual presentation of the JSON, while validation determines whether
the input follows valid JSON grammar.

When invalid JSON is passed to a standard parser such as `JSON.parse()`, the parser
returns a syntax error rather than producing a usable object. A formatter that validates
the input can therefore help identify malformed data before it is sent to an application
or used in development.

Common JSON syntax problems include missing commas, unmatched brackets, unescaped
characters, incorrect quotation marks, and incomplete key-value pairs. JSON property
names and string values must use double quotation marks. Values such as `true`, `
false`, and `null` are written without quotation marks.

The tool reports malformed input so the relevant section can be corrected before
the JSON is copied or processed further.

## JSON Validation and JSON Schema Validation

Basic JSON validation confirms that the document follows JSON syntax. It does not
determine whether the data meets the requirements of a particular application.

For example, a payload may be syntactically valid while containing a missing customer
ID, a date in the wrong format, an unexpected data type, or a property that should
not be present. These problems require validation against application rules or a
JSON Schema.

A JSON Schema can define required fields, accepted data types, permitted values,
object structures, and other constraints. The JSON Formatter is useful for organising
the payload and detecting malformed syntax, but a dedicated schema validator is
required when the content must comply with a predefined data model.

## Formatting and Minifying JSON

Formatting and minifying are opposite ways of presenting the same data. Formatting
adds indentation, spaces, and line breaks to improve human readability. Minifying
removes unnecessary whitespace to create a more compact payload.

Formatted JSON is generally more suitable for development, testing, debugging, documentation,
and manual editing. Minified JSON can be useful when reducing transfer size is important,
particularly for large responses or frequently exchanged data.

Whitespace outside JSON string values does not change the meaning of the document.
A correctly formatted and correctly minified version can therefore represent the
same data even though their visual appearance and file size differ.

## Private JSON Formatting in Your Browser

The JSON Formatter processes the pasted content locally in your browser. Sensitive
API payloads, internal configuration values, authentication-related fields, unpublished
data, and other content do not need to be uploaded to a remote server.

Once formatting is complete, you can copy the readable output and continue working
in your preferred development environment. Browser-based processing provides a practical
way to inspect and organise JSON without installing additional software or sending
the data to an external formatting service.
