A Virtual Private Cloud, commonly abbreviated as VPC, is a cloud computing model that provides an isolated and customisable virtual network within a public cloud environment. It is particularly valuable for organisations that need greater control over how their cloud resources, applications and data are accessed and managed.
A VPC allows businesses to separate publicly accessible resources from systems and data that should only be available to authorised users. Access can be restricted according to user roles, network rules, IP addresses and other security criteria. This structure helps organisations create a more private, controlled and secure cloud environment.
Although a VPC operates within a public cloud infrastructure, its resources are logically isolated from those of other customers. This isolation helps protect confidential information and reduces the risk of unauthorised third-party access.
For example, access to a specific database may be limited to selected users, applications or approved IP addresses. Additional security controls, such as virtual private networks, network firewalls, private subnets and access control rules, can also be used to strengthen protection and improve network management.
One of the most widely used VPC services is Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, or Amazon VPC, which forms part of Amazon Web Services. Amazon VPC enables organisations to create and manage their own virtual network environments, including IP address ranges, subnets, routing rules, gateways and security controls.
Businesses can use these features to manage resource isolation, define access restrictions, secure applications and control network traffic. VPC solutions are commonly preferred by organisations that manage large volumes of data, operate critical applications or require stronger security, privacy and compliance controls within cloud environments.
