A browser is software that allows users to access web pages. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge and Opera are among the best-known browser examples. Users rely on browsers when they want to visit a website from a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. The browser sends the request for a web address to the relevant server and displays the returned content as a readable, viewable or interactive page.

Web pages are usually built with technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Browsers interpret these files and display them on the screen as text, images, videos, forms, buttons and other page elements. For this reason, browsers are not only address bars; they are essential software that enables web pages to be displayed correctly and interacted with. The quality of the web browsing experience depends heavily on browser performance, security and compatibility with web standards.

Browsers are used to access web pages on the World Wide Web. However, the internet and the web are not the same thing. The internet refers to the broader infrastructure that connects different networks, while the World Wide Web is a system of web pages and links operating on that infrastructure. Browsers are mainly used to view web pages; email, file transfer and other internet services may also operate through different protocols and applications.

Browsers have many basic features. The address bar is where users type the address of the website they want to visit. The homepage is the default page displayed when the browser is opened and can be changed by the user. Bookmarks allow frequently visited pages to be saved. The history section lets users view web pages they have previously visited within a certain period.

Password saving, autofill, private browsing, download management, tabbed browsing and extension support are also common features of modern browsers. Private browsing helps prevent local browser history from being saved on the device, but it does not make the user completely anonymous online. Password-saving features provide convenience, but they should be supported with strong device security, a secure master password and two-factor authentication where possible. For this reason, security and privacy features should be considered alongside speed when choosing a browser.

Browsers differ in terms of performance, privacy, extension support, device compatibility and ecosystem integration. Chrome stands out with strong integration into the Google ecosystem and broad extension support; however, Chrome itself is not fully open source, but is based on the open-source Chromium project. Mozilla Firefox is an open-source browser known for its privacy-focused features. Safari is developed by Apple and is the default browser on macOS and iOS devices. Microsoft Edge is a modern browser integrated with the Windows ecosystem.

Internet Explorer was once a widely used browser, but it has largely been replaced by Microsoft Edge in terms of modern web standards and security expectations. For this reason, current web projects usually prioritise compatibility with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and mobile browsers. A properly functioning browser experience allows users to access websites quickly, securely and smoothly.
