The appropriate method depends on the research question, data type and analytical objective.

Pattern analysis, data filtering and decision trees may support comparative studies. Pattern analysis helps identify recurring behaviours, trends and relationships within data. Data filtering selects records that meet particular conditions and creates more suitable groups for comparison. Decision trees can be used to evaluate the possible consequences, conditions and pathways associated with different choices.

Comparative analysis is used in healthcare, economics, education, social sciences, marketing and business management. Healthcare applications may compare treatments, patient groups, diagnostic results or medical images according to selected criteria. Businesses can examine sales across different periods, competitor performance or departmental efficiency. Marketing teams may compare campaigns using measures such as audience, cost, conversion and revenue.

In scientific research, comparison helps examine similarities and differences between findings. However, comparing two datasets does not independently prove that the results are accurate, reliable or causal. Data collection methods, sample size, measurement conditions and external variables must also be considered. Appropriate statistical methods and control mechanisms are required to produce reliable conclusions.

A comparative analysis should begin with a clearly defined research question and comparison criteria. The selected elements should be evaluated using consistent periods, conditions and definitions. External factors, missing data and structural differences between groups must also be considered. When applied correctly, comparative analysis can improve problem understanding, support the evaluation of alternatives and contribute to more informed decisions.
