Customer Data Platform (CDP)

A Customer Data Platform, commonly abbreviated as CDP, is a software platform that collects and unifies customer data from multiple sources to create centralised customer profiles.

The primary purpose of a CDP is to bring together data from websites, mobile applications, customer service systems, points of sale, email platforms and other customer touchpoints. This gives businesses access to more consistent, complete and up-to-date information about each customer.

CDPs can combine different types of data, including demographic details, purchase histories, website and mobile application interactions, campaign responses, customer service records and offline behaviour. The collected information is processed through identity resolution and data unification procedures to create consolidated customer profiles.

These profiles enable businesses to analyse customer behaviour in greater detail, monitor interactions and use the resulting insights across marketing, sales, customer experience and analytics activities.

Customer data platforms make information centrally accessible to marketing and analytics tools. This helps organisations identify complex behavioural patterns, understand customer needs more effectively and discover new commercial opportunities.

A CDP requires customer data to operate. Most of the information used by these platforms consists of first-party data, which is collected directly through a company’s interactions with its customers. Examples include website visits, mobile application activity, transactions, account information and customer service conversations.

CDPs may also process zero-party data, which refers to information that customers voluntarily share about their preferences and interests. Third-party data is obtained from external providers. However, due to privacy regulations and data quality requirements, modern CDP strategies generally focus on first-party and permission-based customer data.

Customer data platforms are designed to provide businesses with a 360-degree customer view. This helps consolidate fragmented or inconsistent customer information stored across different systems and reduce gaps in the customer experience.

Insights generated through a CDP can be used to analyse the customer journey, build audience segments and develop personalised communications. These insights can then be activated across marketing channels to deliver relevant campaigns to the right customers at the appropriate time and through the most suitable touchpoint.

Ultimately, customer data platforms support not only the collection of information but also its activation, helping businesses create more consistent customer experiences and develop data-driven marketing strategies.
