Mobile-first Indexing

Mobile-first indexing is Google’s indexing approach in which the mobile version of a web page is primarily used when evaluating that page. This does not mean that Google creates a separate index only for mobile pages. Google has a single index; however, the mobile version of a page can be used as the primary basis for crawling, understanding and evaluation. For this reason, the mobile version of a website is critically important for SEO performance.

Google first announced the mobile-first indexing approach in 2016 and explained that one of the main reasons for this change was that most users were searching on Google through mobile devices. The transition was then expanded gradually, and on October 31, 2023, Google announced that the Mobile-First Indexing process had been completed. Therefore, mobile-first indexing is no longer only a future SEO trend; it is now a core part of how Google evaluates web pages.

Mobile-first indexing does not mean that the desktop version is completely irrelevant. However, Google may try to understand the page based on the content, links, images, videos, structured data and metadata it sees on the mobile version. If important content available on the desktop page is missing from the mobile version, this may negatively affect search performance. For this reason, the mobile and desktop versions should be equivalent in terms of content.

Not having a mobile-friendly interface does not necessarily mean that a page will not be indexed. However, websites that provide a poor mobile experience, load slowly, show incomplete content or make it difficult for users to navigate may be at a disadvantage in organic performance. Mobile user experience, readability, tappable elements, page speed and visual compatibility should therefore be handled carefully.

One of the most important issues for mobile-first indexing is content equivalence. Main text, headings, images, videos, internal links and important page components available on the desktop version should also be accessible on the mobile version. On mobile, content may be presented inside tabs, accordions or different layouts; however, Google should be able to access this content and users should be able to view it comfortably. Using missing or shortened content on the mobile version may negatively affect visibility for the keywords the page targets.

Structured data is also important for mobile-first indexing. If schema markup is used for products, articles, FAQs, breadcrumbs, reviews, prices, stock status or events, this data should be consistent across mobile and desktop versions. Unnecessary structured data or markup for content that is not visible on the page should be avoided. Structured data should only support content that actually exists on the page and is presented to users.

Metadata should also be consistent across mobile and desktop versions. Important SEO fields such as the title tag, meta description, robots tag and canonical should be configured correctly. If a separate mobile URL structure is used, canonical and alternate links must be set up properly. Websites using responsive design can manage this structure more easily because the same URL serves a single page that adapts to different devices.

Page speed and technical performance are also important in the mobile-first indexing process. Mobile users often access websites through different connection speeds and device capabilities. Large images, heavy JavaScript files, unoptimised videos, unnecessary third-party scripts and weak hosting performance can negatively affect the mobile experience. For this reason, image optimisation, caching, CDN usage, clean code structure and Core Web Vitals metrics should be monitored regularly.

In summary, mobile-first indexing is Google’s indexing approach in which the mobile version of a web page can be used as the primary basis for evaluation. Having a website that simply opens on mobile is not enough for a successful mobile SEO structure. Mobile and desktop content should be equivalent, structured data should be used consistently, metadata should be configured correctly, page speed should be improved and the user experience should be designed for mobile devices.
