Permanently Redirect – 301

A 301 redirect is an HTTP status code that indicates a URL has permanently moved to another URL. It is used to permanently redirect users and search engines from an old address to a new address. A 301 redirect can be used when a page URL changes, a website moves to a new domain, a site switches from HTTP to HTTPS or two similar pieces of content are merged into one page.

The main purpose of a 301 redirect is to ensure that users and search engine bots reaching the old URL are sent to the correct new address. When a user clicks an old link, the browser automatically redirects them to the new page. Search engines also interpret this response as a signal that the old page has permanently moved to the new address. For this reason, 301 redirects are one of the most commonly used technical redirect methods in SEO.

A 301 redirect should be used for permanent changes. If a page URL will no longer be used and there is a new equivalent page, redirecting the old URL to the new URL with a 301 is the right approach. For example, if example.com/old-service has permanently moved to example.com/new-service, users visiting the old address should be redirected to the new service page. This prevents users from landing on an empty page or seeing a 404 error.

A 301 redirect should not be confused with a 302 redirect. A 301 redirect means permanent relocation. A 302 redirect is used for temporary relocation. If a page will be redirected to another address only for a short period, a 302 may be more appropriate. However, if the URL change is permanent, a 301 should be used. Using the wrong redirect type can cause search engines to misinterpret the move.

301 redirects are critical during site migrations. If a brand moves to a new domain, URLs on the old site should be redirected one by one to their most relevant equivalents on the new site. This process is not simply about redirecting the entire old site to the new homepage. Each old page should be redirected to the closest matching new page whenever possible. For example, an old product page should redirect to the relevant new product page, and an old category page should redirect to the relevant new category page.

Irrelevant redirects should be avoided. For example, redirecting a “Contact” page to an “About Us” page is not always correct. If the contact page has been permanently removed and the closest new page where users can find contact information is truly the “About Us” page, it may be considered. However, if contact information exists on another page, the redirect should point to that more relevant page. The new page should answer the user need as closely as possible to the old page.

A 301 redirect can help preserve SEO value, but it does not guarantee everything on its own. For signals from the old URL to be transferred to the new URL, the redirect should be accurate, relevant and technically clean. If the old page has strong organic traffic or backlinks, the new page should answer the same topic and user intent. Redirecting an old page to an unrelated page can harm both user experience and SEO performance.

301 redirects can be used in different scenarios. Moving a website to a new domain, switching from HTTP to HTTPS, consolidating www and non-www versions, changing URL structure, merging similar content into one page, pointing a removed page to its new equivalent or making a permanent post-campaign page change are some examples. The important point is that the redirect should be used for a genuinely permanent change.

A 301 redirect can be compared to a physical store permanently moving to a new location. If you leave a sign at the old store showing the new address, customers can find the new location. A 301 redirect performs a similar function on the web. It takes users and search engines from the old address to the new address where the page now lives.

Before implementing 301 redirects, a redirect plan should be prepared. It should be clearly defined which old URL will redirect to which new URL. Especially for large websites, e-commerce projects or domain migrations, creating a redirect map is critical. Performing mass redirects without such a map can increase the risk of incorrect redirects, 404 pages and SEO loss.

There should be topical and functional alignment between the old URL and the new URL. If the old page is about “sports shoe models,” the new page should also be related to sports shoe models. Redirecting the old page to a generic homepage may look like an easy solution, but it is often not correct. If users cannot find the content they expected, they may leave the page. Search engines may also treat irrelevant redirects as weak signals.

Technically, a 301 redirect can be implemented in different ways. On Apache servers, it can be done through the .htaccess file. It can also be configured through Nginx settings, hosting panels, CDN redirect rules, CMS plugins or application code. On WordPress websites, plugins such as Redirection can make this process easier. However, even when a plugin is used, it should always be tested that the redirect actually returns a 301 status code.

Incorrectly configured 301 redirects can cause different problems. If the old URL does not redirect to the new page, a 404 error may occur. If a URL reaches the new page through multiple redirect steps, a redirect chain is created. If URLs redirect to each other in a loop, a redirect loop occurs. These issues can negatively affect page speed, crawl efficiency, user experience and SEO performance.

Redirect chains should be avoided. The old URL should redirect directly to the final new URL. For example, if page A redirects to B and B redirects to C, this chain is unnecessary. Page A should redirect directly to C. This helps users reach the page faster and helps search engines crawl the site more efficiently.

After implementing 301 redirects, checks should be performed. It should be confirmed whether old URLs redirect to the correct new pages, whether the status code returned is actually 301, whether the sitemap has been updated with the new URLs and whether internal links still point to old addresses. Internal links should point directly to the new URLs whenever possible, rather than relying on redirects. This reduces unnecessary redirect load.

In large migrations such as domain changes, site backups, database backups, DNS planning, SSL setup, Search Console verifications, sitemap updates and analytics measurement should all be handled together. A site migration is not completed only by adding 301 redirects. Technical SEO, server management, measurement and content mapping should be planned together. Otherwise, organic traffic, conversion and user experience issues may appear after the migration.

Because a 301 redirect is permanent, the decision should be made carefully. For temporary campaigns, maintenance periods or short-term tests, using a 301 may not be correct. In these cases, different HTTP responses such as 302, 307 or, in maintenance scenarios, 503 may be more suitable. A 301 should be used when the old URL will no longer be used and the new URL is the permanent address.
