Remarketing

Remarketing is a digital marketing method used to reach users who have previously interacted with a website or mobile application. It allows advertisers to show ads again to people who visited a site, viewed a product, started a form, added an item to the cart or completed a specific in-app action. The aim is to bring users who have already engaged with the brand back into the journey and encourage conversions such as purchases, form submissions or sign-ups. For this reason, remarketing is one of the most widely used methods in performance marketing.

When planned correctly, remarketing campaigns can support brand recall and improve conversion rates. However, showing users too many ads, irrelevant messages or offers that do not match their intent can create a negative experience. Audience segmentation, frequency control and behaviour-based messaging are therefore important. Cookie usage, app permissions and personal data processing should also be managed in line with applicable regulations and platform policies.

For example, a user may visit a furniture brand’s website, view several products and leave without making a purchase. Later, the same user may see ads for those products or similar items on Instagram, YouTube, news websites or other digital platforms. These ads are delivered through remarketing audiences created based on the user’s previous behaviour. This gives the brand another opportunity to reach someone who may be more likely to buy.

Remarketing does not mean showing the same ad to every previous website visitor. Users who abandoned their cart, viewed a specific product category, started but did not complete a form or previously made a purchase can be divided into different segments. Each segment may receive a different message, offer, creative or landing page. For instance, an ad reminding users of the product they left in their cart may be more relevant than a general ad shown to someone who only visited the homepage.

Google Ads, Meta ads, YouTube, email marketing and app campaigns are commonly used for remarketing. Google Ads offers options such as standard remarketing, dynamic remarketing, video remarketing and campaigns based on customer lists. Dynamic remarketing can display products that users previously viewed or similar products within the ad. This approach is especially useful for e-commerce websites aiming to increase product-level conversions.

A successful remarketing strategy requires more than targeting past visitors. It should consider where users dropped off, which products they viewed, how recently they interacted and whether they have purchased before. Frequency, audience duration, creative variety and conversion goals should be optimised regularly. When applied correctly, remarketing helps users see more relevant ads while allowing brands to use their advertising budgets more efficiently.
