Search Engine Optimization, commonly abbreviated as SEO, is the practice of improving a website so that search engines can crawl, understand and index it more effectively, while helping users find content that matches their needs. Its primary purpose is to increase a website’s organic visibility for relevant search queries and attract more qualified traffic.

SEO is not limited to adapting a website to the technical requirements of search engines. Content quality, search intent, site architecture, page performance, mobile usability, brand trust, internal and external links, and user experience can all influence SEO performance. For this reason, SEO is a multidisciplinary field involving content creators, developers, designers, analytics specialists, product teams and digital marketing professionals.

The purpose of SEO is not simply to achieve the first position in search results. User needs differ depending on the query, industry and type of page. Some pages are designed to provide information, some introduce products or services, and others aim to generate sales, form submissions or appointments. For this reason, SEO should not be treated as a one-time optimization project. Technical errors, content performance, search queries, rankings and conversions should be monitored regularly.

SEO performance can be evaluated using Google Search Console, web analytics tools, website crawling software and keyword research platforms. Metrics such as impressions, organic clicks, click-through rate, average position, organic sessions, conversions, revenue and indexing status can be monitored. However, focusing only on rankings is not sufficient. If organic traffic does not contribute to user or business objectives, the SEO strategy should be reconsidered.

In a successful SEO strategy, the needs of users and search engines should not be treated as separate. Search engines aim to connect users with useful results. Therefore, creating a clear, fast, trustworthy and valuable website for users also forms the foundation of effective SEO. Practices that focus only on algorithms without providing user value may not produce sustainable results.

In summary, SEO is the collection of practices used to improve a website’s organic visibility in search engines and help users reach the pages they need more easily.
