Urchin Tracking Module (UTM)

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module and refers to parameters added to URLs in order to track which campaign, source or marketing channel brings traffic to a website. The name comes from Urchin Software Corporation, which was acquired by Google in 2005. UTM parameters are widely used to measure the performance of digital marketing campaigns. They help analyse user behaviour from advertising, email, social media, affiliate and other campaign links.

A UTM is not exactly a code snippet, but rather a set of tracking parameters added to the end of a URL. For example, a campaign link may include fields such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. These parameters tell analytics tools where the user came from, which channel type was used and which campaign the visit belongs to. This allows platforms such as Google Analytics to report campaign performance in a more organised and comparable way.

UTM parameters generally consist of five main components: source, medium, campaign, term and content. utm_source identifies the traffic source and may include values such as Google, Instagram, newsletter or the name of a specific publisher. utm_medium defines the channel type and may use values such as cpc, email, social or referral. utm_campaign identifies the campaign name, while utm_term is often used for paid search keyword tracking and utm_content helps distinguish different creatives or link variations within the same campaign.

For example, a URL such as https://kriko.io/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=summer_campaign shows that the user came from Instagram through a social media campaign called summer campaign. This structure helps evaluate which campaigns generate more traffic, conversions or revenue. However, UTM parameters do not directly show whether a user came from a mobile or desktop device. Device, browser and operating system information is collected separately by analytics tools such as Google Analytics.

UTM usage is important for marketing strategy because it makes campaign performance measurable. Separate UTM structures can be created for social media posts, email newsletters, banner ads, influencer links and digital advertising campaigns. This makes it possible to analyse which channels are more efficient, which campaigns generate more conversions and which content variations perform better. If tagging is not applied correctly, traffic may be attributed to the wrong sources or reports may become inconsistent.

A standard naming convention should be used when creating UTMs. Differences in capitalisation, special characters, spaces and inconsistent channel names can cause reporting issues. For example, using social, Social and social_media for the same channel may split the data into separate rows. Organisations should therefore create a UTM naming guide, standardise campaign names and ensure that all teams follow the same rules.

In Google Analytics 4, UTM data can be analysed through traffic acquisition, user acquisition and campaign reports. When advertising campaigns, email sends and social media links are tagged correctly, teams can see which sources generate more sessions, conversions or revenue. However, if auto-tagging is used for Google Ads campaigns, UTM structures and auto-tagging settings should be kept consistent. Properly used UTM parameters make digital marketing performance more transparent, measurable and easier to optimise.
