User Interface Design, commonly abbreviated as UI, refers to the design of the visual and functional surface through which users interact with a product, system, website, mobile application or device. Buttons, menus, icons, forms, colours, typography, screen layout, notifications and interactive elements are the main components of a user interface. The purpose of UI design is to help users understand the system easily, complete their intended actions comfortably and interact with the product in a more organised way.
User interfaces are not limited to websites and mobile applications. ATMs, navigation devices, smartphones, tablets, desktop software, smart TVs, home appliances, car screens and kiosk systems also have user interfaces. Through these interfaces, users can communicate with a system without needing technical or programming knowledge. UI forms the visual and interactive design layer of that experience on the screen or physical interface. In other words, UX helps define what the user needs and how the process should work, while UI designs how this structure will be visually and interactively presented.
In a successful UI process, drafts, wireframes, visual designs and prototypes can be evaluated together. In the first stage, the page structure and basic flows are defined. Then details such as colours, fonts, icons, button styles, spacing and visual hierarchy are added to the design. These designs can then be reviewed through user tests, A/B tests or prototype evaluations. These tests help identify where users struggle, which buttons they do not notice and which areas create hesitation.
Simplicity and consistency are important principles in UI design. The language used in the interface should be simple, directions should be clear and visual elements should be understandable. Excessive use of colours, icons, animations or text can overwhelm users. In contrast, proper spacing, clear buttons, readable typography, sufficient contrast and an organised page structure help users use the system more comfortably. Especially in mobile interfaces, tappable areas should be large enough and content should remain readable on small screens.
Typography and colour usage are also important parts of user interface design. Font choice, font size, line spacing and text contrast directly affect readability. Colours should be used not only for aesthetic purposes but also for guidance and prioritisation. For example, making a purchase button visible, making error messages easy to notice or clearly showing the active step helps users understand the interface faster. However, colour usage should be planned with accessibility rules in mind.
