Strategy, Creatives, and Optimization Tactics in TikTok Ads

6 mins read

At the end of the day, the platform still has a large and distinctive audience of its own. This means it is possible to reach audiences on TikTok that we cannot access through platforms such as Meta and Google. Even when we can reach the same users through other platforms, we still need to engage with them multiple times, across several different channels, before we can persuade them. So, how can an e-commerce brand build a successful advertising strategy on TikTok?

The Right Account Structure

The first step towards success on TikTok is setting up the campaign structure correctly. Unlike Meta and Google Ads, TikTok’s algorithm generally performs better with broad targeting. Therefore:

Separate TOF, Top of Funnel, and BOF, Bottom of Funnel, campaigns: Create separate sets for cold audiences and remarketing.

Do not hesitate to use broad targeting: Thanks to TikTok’s powerful discovery algorithm, starting with broad age and gender targeting may initially be more efficient than relying heavily on interest-based audiences.

Be patient during the learning phase: Allow campaigns to generate at least 50 conversions during the learning phase. Making frequent optimisations may disrupt the algorithm.

Use Winning Creatives

The most critical part of succeeding on TikTok, and this time it really is critical, is the creative. Users do not want advertisements to feel separate from the organic content they consume. Therefore:

🎥 Use UGC, User-Generated Content: Natural-looking advertisements created by real people generally perform better. Even when users know that a piece of content is an advertisement, they do not want it to feel overly promotional. We should therefore avoid making the advertising element too obvious.

📢 Think “TikTok-First”: One of the most common mistakes is trying to reuse assets that were originally created for other channels. Instead of copying advertisements prepared for television or Meta, create fast-paced, entertaining content that fits TikTok trends.

The first three seconds are critical: We need an opening that captures the user’s attention immediately. Curiosity-driven introductions such as “My life changed after buying this product”, “I was shocked when I discovered this”, or “It is time to finally get rid of this problem” can be effective.

📊 Use a diverse range of creatives: Run A/B tests with four or five different advertising assets to identify the best-performing formats. I know we constantly talk about asset diversity for Google and Meta as well, but TikTok is probably the platform where creative variety has the most direct impact on results. Assets also reach saturation much faster than they do on Google or Meta. Therefore, in addition to maintaining creative diversity, it is critical to refresh these assets more frequently than on other platforms.

The Most Suitable Campaign Models

The campaign models that generally work best for e-commerce in TikTok Ads Manager are:

🛒 Conversion Campaigns

Most suitable targeting: Broad targeting combined with TikTok’s automated optimisation. We can also say that this is currently the recommended approach on Meta.

Budget: The budget should be sufficient to generate at least 50 conversions. Naturally, it is not possible to estimate this precisely at the beginning. However, once the test campaign starts, you should plan budget increases based on the actual conversion costs you observe. Initial costs may not be at the level you want, but you need to make enough of an investment to reach the first 50 conversions. After the learning phase is completed, you can use optimisation to bring those costs closer to your targets. The priority at the beginning should be completing the learning process.

Formats that can be used: Spark Ads, which allow organic content to be used as advertising, or standard TikTok video advertisements.

🔁 Dynamic Showcase Ads, DSA

You can run dynamic advertisements using product catalogues and show the most relevant products to the target audience. Through retargeting, you can also serve tailored advertisements to users who abandoned their carts or viewed specific products.

Optimisation Processes

Achieving success on TikTok is genuinely more difficult, so it requires more time, continuous analysis, and regular optimisation. Some of the metrics and optimisation tactics that should be monitored include:

📊 If CTR, Click-Through Rate, Is Low

Change the advertising content and make the first three seconds more attention-grabbing. I shared several examples of this above. Review the length of the advertisement as well. When necessary, try adding a stronger incentive to keep users engaged.

Add a call to action, or make the existing CTA clearer.

🛍️ If the Conversion Rate Is Low

Check the speed and mobile compatibility of the landing page. Make sure the advertising content and the landing page are fully aligned. You should also conduct a competitor analysis for the product or products you are selling. Even when you have excellent content and show it to the right person at the right time, you may need to take different actions if competing brands offer the same product under significantly more attractive conditions.

Strengthen your remarketing campaigns.

💸 If ROAS, Return on Ad Spend, Is Low

Give greater visibility and budget to your best-performing creatives. You do not need to keep a large number of creatives live simply for the sake of asset diversity. Variety is critical at the beginning, but once you have collected meaningful data, you can eliminate weaker assets from the current creative set. You can then prepare and add alternative creatives again.

Segment audiences and focus on users who are more relevant to your offer. We have said that starting with broad audiences usually works better, but this may vary depending on many factors, including the product you sell, whether it is a niche product, your brand awareness, the level of competition, and your budget. There is no single correct approach, so you need to be confident when taking the actions required by your specific circumstances. When you are dealing with a niche product, a limited budget, and intense competition, TikTok may not have enough time or data to identify the right audience. In that case, you can apply the necessary targeting restrictions yourself.

When used with the right strategy, TikTok Ads can become an important additional sales channel for e-commerce brands. To summarise:

✅ Build a strong campaign structure.

✅ Create content specifically for TikTok.

✅ Trust the algorithm, start with broad targeting, and remain patient.

✅ Analyse the data and optimise continuously.
