Meta Description

Meta description is an HTML element that briefly summarises the content of a web page. It usually appears as the short description text below the title on search engine results pages. When users search on engines such as Google, they evaluate the page title, URL and description together. For this reason, the meta description is an important field that can influence whether a user decides to click on a result.

The meta description is usually placed in the <head> section of a page’s HTML structure. Technically, it can be defined as: <meta name="description" content="Short description of the page">. The content field should include a short description that summarises the topic of the page and the value it offers to users. It is recommended to prepare a unique, clear and relevant meta description for every important page.

From an SEO perspective, meta description is not usually considered a direct ranking factor. In other words, writing a meta description alone does not guarantee that a page will rank higher in search results. However, a well-written description can attract user attention and increase click-through rate. When click-through rate, user behaviour and content relevance are evaluated together, meta descriptions can indirectly support organic performance.

Meta descriptions are generally written at around 150-160 characters. However, how much of the description appears in search results depends not only on character count but also on pixel width and the structure Google uses on the results page. Very long descriptions may be truncated and end with an ellipsis. For this reason, the most important message, main benefit and target keyword should be clearly placed near the beginning of the description.

A good meta description should be short, clear, persuasive and aligned with the page content. It should tell users what they will find on the page without making misleading promises. Unnecessary keyword repetition should be avoided, and the description should be written in a natural sentence structure. For example, for a category page listing smartphone models, a description such as “Explore next-generation smartphone models and compare options that match your needs.” can be used.

Using keywords in meta descriptions can be useful, but the usage should be natural. The main query and search intent targeted by the page can be included in the description. For example, for a page that provides weather information, a description such as “View current weather information and short-term forecasts for all cities in Turkey.” can be used. Such descriptions clarify the topic of the page and give users a reason to click.

Using the same meta description across every page is not a good practice. Different page types such as product pages, category pages, blog posts, service pages or corporate pages should have separate descriptions. Repeating the same description across many pages can make it harder for search engines and users to understand the difference between pages. Especially on e-commerce websites, category and product pages should be supported with unique descriptions.

Google may not always show the written meta description exactly as it appears in the HTML. In some cases, it may select a different section from the page content if it considers that section more relevant to the user’s query. Therefore, writing a meta description is important, but it should not be assumed that it will always appear in the same way. In summary, meta description is an important SEO field that strengthens search result appearance, manages user expectations and can support click-through rate.
