Meta Tags

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide additional information about a web page to search engines, browsers and social media platforms. They are usually placed in the <head> section of a page and are not directly visible to users within the page content. These tags can be used to define the page title, description, crawling and indexing preferences, character encoding, mobile display behaviour or social sharing previews. For this reason, meta tags play an important role in technical SEO and page presentation.

One of the best-known elements in SEO is the title tag. Although it is often called meta title in SEO practice, it is technically defined with the <title> tag. The clickable blue title that usually appears in search engine results may be generated from this title. The title tag helps users quickly understand the topic of the page and helps search engines evaluate the main theme of the content. Therefore, every important page should have a unique, descriptive title that matches search intent.

When preparing a title tag, the main topic of the page should be stated clearly. It is generally recommended to keep it around 50-60 characters, but the most important point is that the title appears understandable and clickable in search results. Unnecessary keyword repetition should be avoided, the title should not mislead users and it should match the page content. For example, a page explaining SEO may use a title such as “What Is SEO? How Is It Done?” However, using a question format is not required for every page.

The meta description is a short description that may appear below the title in search engine results. This field summarises the page content and can influence the user’s decision to click. Meta description is not usually considered a direct ranking factor, but it can affect click-through rate and user expectations. Therefore, the description should be short, clear, persuasive and aligned with the page content. It is generally recommended to keep it around 150-160 characters, although search engines may sometimes show a different text in the results.

The meta robots tag gives search engines signals about crawling and indexing behaviour at the page level. noindex indicates that the page should not be added to the search engine index. nofollow gives search engines a restrictive signal about following or evaluating the links on the page. The values index and follow are usually default behaviours, so they often do not need to be written separately. However, indexing and crawling decisions should be configured carefully on critical pages.

The meta robots tag should not be confused with robots.txt. The robots.txt file manages whether bots can crawl certain URL paths, while the meta robots tag provides page-level information about indexing and link behaviour. For example, if you do not want a page to appear in search results, noindex is usually the correct approach. However, if the page is blocked from crawling through robots.txt, the search engine may not be able to see the noindex tag on the page. For this reason, these two structures should be evaluated together and carefully in technical SEO decisions.

Meta tags are not limited to SEO titles, descriptions and robots directives. The charset tag defines the character encoding of the page, while the viewport tag determines how the page scales on mobile devices. Open Graph and Twitter Card tags help control how the page appears when shared on social media platforms. These tags can influence the social sharing title, description and image preview of a page.

In summary, meta tags are important HTML elements that help web pages be understood and presented more accurately by search engines, browsers and social platforms. When used correctly, they can improve search result appearance, support click-through rate, provide indexing control and strengthen mobile and social sharing experiences. However, meta tags alone do not guarantee SEO success; they should be considered together with content quality, technical SEO, user experience, page speed and search intent.
