Usability refers to how easily, efficiently and accurately users can use a product, system, website, application or process. Usability is not limited to digital products; it can apply to software, mobile apps, websites, coffee machines, bicycles, elevator panels, books or service processes. In any area involving human interaction, how comfortably users can complete their intended task is an important point of evaluation.

Usability is often confused with user experience. User Experience, or UX, is a broader concept that includes the overall experience, perception, emotion and satisfaction a user has with a product or service. Usability is an important part of this experience and focuses more specifically on ease of use, task completion success, learning process and error rate. A product may be usable but still offer a weak overall experience; similarly, a visually impressive product may have usability problems.

A product with strong usability allows users to understand and complete their intended tasks easily. When users interact with the product for the first time, they should be able to understand the basic functions quickly, reach the areas they need and avoid unnecessary complexity. For example, on an e-commerce website, product search, filtering, adding to cart and checkout steps should be clear and understandable. Users should easily see where they are in the purchase process, which step they have completed and what they need to do next.

One of the main criteria of usability is learnability. Learnability shows how quickly users can understand a product or system when they use it for the first time. Complex menus, unclear button labels, unexplained icons and long process steps can reduce learnability. In contrast, clear guidance, understandable labels, consistent design language and interfaces that guide the user make the learning process easier.

Another important criterion is efficiency. Once users have learned a system, they should be able to complete their tasks quickly and with minimal effort. For example, making frequently used actions easily accessible, reducing unnecessary steps and simplifying repetitive tasks can improve efficiency. Efficiency is especially important in heavily used systems such as professional software, e-commerce websites, banking applications and customer service platforms.

Memorability is also an important part of usability. When users return to a product after not using it for a while, they should not have to learn the system all over again. Consistent menus, icons, process flows and page layouts support memorability. For example, if the money transfer steps in a mobile banking application follow a similar logic each time, users can remember the system more easily and feel more confident.

Error management is also critical for usability. A well-designed system should reduce the likelihood of user errors and provide an easy way to recover when errors occur. Clearly indicating missing fields in forms, explaining incorrectly entered information, asking for confirmation before deletion or offering undo options can increase error tolerance. When users make a mistake, they should easily understand what happened and how to correct it.

Satisfaction is another important dimension of usability. Users should feel comfortable, safe and in control while using a product or system. If the process creates unnecessary stress, uncertainty or wasted time, the product may be considered problematic in terms of usability even if it technically works. For example, if the floor buttons in an elevator are arranged confusingly, users may struggle to find the correct floor. In this case, the product works, but its ease of use is weak.

Usability testing can be used to evaluate usability. In these tests, real or target users are asked to complete specific tasks using the product. Observers analyse where users struggle, which steps cause errors, which areas are difficult to understand and how long it takes to complete the task. This makes it possible to measure not only whether the product technically works, but also how easily and safely users can reach their goals.

In summary, usability is an important quality factor that shows whether a product or system is easy to learn, efficient to use, tolerant of errors and satisfying for users. Good usability helps users reach their goals faster, reduces error rates, increases satisfaction and strengthens the overall user experience.
