The resulting PNG stores the currently decoded image without applying an additional lossy compression stage. This means the conversion can prevent further JPEG-related degradation during the conversion itself, but it cannot make the source image sharper or recover its original quality.
For the best result, always begin with the highest-quality source file available. When an original PNG, RAW file, design document, or high-resolution export exists, using that source will generally provide better results than converting a previously compressed JPG.
Can a JPG Become Transparent After Conversion?
PNG supports transparent and semi-transparent pixels through an alpha channel, whereas standard JPEG files do not store transparency. Converting a JPG to PNG makes the output format capable of supporting transparency, but it does not automatically remove the existing background.
To create a transparent background, the unwanted area must be removed with an image editing or background removal tool after conversion. The edited image can then be saved as PNG so the transparent pixels are preserved.
This workflow can be useful for product cut-outs, logos, profile images, overlays, icons, and other assets intended to appear over different backgrounds.
JPG and PNG File Size Differences
JPEG compression is usually more efficient for photographs and images containing many colours, textures, and gradual tonal transitions. PNG prioritises lossless storage and may produce a considerably larger file when the source is a detailed photograph.
For this reason, converting JPG to PNG should not generally be treated as a file-size optimisation method. The main benefits are lossless output, PNG compatibility, support for future transparency, and suitability for graphics with sharp visual details.
